The structure of the economy has not remained unchanged for fairly longperiod of time. The share of the agricultural sector in the total GDP remainedbetween 45 to 50 percent. The share of the service sector including bothdistributive and other services has ranged between 40 to 45 percent. The shareof the industrial sector, however, has remained in the range of 10 to 15 percent.With a stagnating industrial sector, the transformation of the economy seems tohave been taking place between agriculture and service sectors (see figure2.1).Figure 2.1: Share of Major Sectors in Real GDPSource: Ministry of Finance and Economic DevelopmentEthiopian exports are dominated by primary agricultural commodities (over 80percent). The sector is concentrated in few commodities. The traditional exportgoods such coffee oilseeds, pulses, hides and skin, and chat account on averagefor about 76 percent of the total export earning of the country.9
