Autocross Results2011 Carolinas PCA Autocross Series:Round #3, SommerfestIt was a great day of racing on a warm Sunday morning for the Carolinas Region Autocross Series. #3, part of theSommerfest Celebration, hosted at Charlotte Knights Stadium. We had a large turnout with 48 registered drivers. Yet amazingly, we also finished the event in record time just beforeNoon. This was one of our closest competitions yet, with many driver positions coming down to thousandthsof a second. There were some new drivers in attendance for their first event, as well as “The Return” of John Meekand Fran and David Lumpkin… whom we had missed very much and are happy to see them back again.Mike Jones finished on top in his autocross class, and solidified his overall Sommerfest win for the most pointsaccrued throughout the entire weekend. Great Job Mike. Our Region PCA President, Harvey Yancey, was in attendance and confident enough and (kind enough) to take the“Walter Stone Challenge.” For those of you unfamiliar with this challenge, it’s where you let Autocross Chairman,Walter Stone, drive your car after you are all done for the day, andsee If he can beat your best time. Walter is one of the best autocrossersaround. He can usually hop in anyone’s car, never havingSommerfest:Rally ResultsMike Jones75pts.Doug SmithMike MastersonTracy GentryMike RichBob FutrellJim HoffmanBill AinsleyJeff GordonJohn ZmudaPatrick KrocJohn BrindleRalph CesteroCharles BranchWhite IddingsJ Michael MorganDave LumpkinAndrew/ShirleyDon Morris72pts.70pts.68pts.67pts.65pts.65pts.65pts.62pts.60pts.60pts.57pts.57pts.56pts.51pts.49pts.39pts.31pts.29pts.driven it, and put down an amazing lap in just a few tries. And heusually does this granny shifting it. So if you beat Walter’s time, then you know you’re really pushing your car hard. Well, Walteronly bested Harvey’s time by 0.067. Meaning Harvey really candrive his car hard.We also had a Superstar from another Region come and join us.If you read Panorama, you have probably seen the name Jeff Gordon(no, not #24) on top of many national Autocross races. Heand his wife made the trek down here to participate in our Sommerfestevents. Unfortunately, he had car problems after just onerun, so we never got to see how our best would stack up againsthim. Needless to say, Jeff would have had his work cut out forhim as our very own Zone 3 representative, Bob Saville, laid downan amazing set of fast runs taking his M02 class win and overallfastest time of the day (FTD). Bob’s win officially ends the Steinbrueck’snearly 2 year stretch of Overall FTD’s. CongratulationsBob, that was some amazing driving. And thank you again to all drivers who came out and attended theevent. We cannot do these Autocross Races without your volunteerwork and we are very appreciative of that. We will be takingthe Sommer… oops Summer off, and be starting back up withRound #4 on Sept. 4Hope to see you there.– Carolina Region Autocross CommitteeJuly 2011 - Page 12
