From the Driver’s SeatHarvey Yancey, PresidentSommerfest 2011 aka “I Love ItWhen a Plan Comes Together’I tell friends outside of PCA that I view theClub as an extension of my family. ActuallyI have learned over time that I can usuallydepend on many people in the club morethan I can some family members. Sad buttrue. Of course the cars were what initialdrew me to PCA, as was the case for 99%of us, but you typically don’t hang out withpeople you don’t like for 16 or 17 years. The weekend of Sommerfest 2011 was anabject lesson for me as to why I love thisClub and Region. Unbeknownst to most participantsour Sommerfest Chair, Jeff Strain, had a death in his family a few days priorto the start of the event. As I have told everyonein the Club, family comes first evenwith an event pending. And as the detailsof the arrangements emerged it becameclear that Jeff would not be able to be in attendanceduring the entire weekend. EnterPlan B.Anyone that has ever planned and executedany event will tell you … the devil is inthe details. And while Jeff had laid down avery solid foundation through his planning, Iknew that there would be things that wouldcome up that had not been thought of previouslyor a circumstance would emergethat would demand a change in plans. Allof the aforementioned happened to me atthe 2008 Parade here in Charlotte and I expectedno different with this event. And in reality a few things did happen in thebackground during the weekend, but goodplanning on Jeff’s part and an incrediblegroup of volunteers mitigated any appreciableimpact on the event or the enjoyment ofany of the participants. There were many, many people that helpedmake this event come together and I thankyou all for your time and efforts. But I specificallywanted to call out the following peoplethat did all of the heavy lifting:Chair – Jeff StrainRegistration – John and Janice ZmudaHospitality – Tammy and Jerry CollinsConcours – Mike Rich and Mike JonesRally – Brian PowellAutocross – Walter Stone, Sean and CariSteinbrueck and Jerry KilcreaseGoodie Store – Sadie KilcreaseIn addition, thanks to Doug Smith for hisguidance during all of those Saturdaymorning planning calls, and also to MattPohsweg and Art Weiss for their invaluableinput.Kudos to all. A job well done.I want to thank Foreign Car Italia of Greensborofor sponsoring the event. Without thesupport of our Regional Sponsors eventslike this would be impossible to put on. Inaddition I want to thank FCI’s representative,Ralph Cestero, and his lovely fiancéeMaureen. They fully immersed themselvesin the PCA culture, participating in the Rallyand the Autocross with a 2011 Panamera.Ralph ended up taking home a 1 st PlaceTrophy for his class win at the Autocross. Iam sure he is already making plans for nextyear’s event.Upcoming EventsNow with Sommerfest 2011 in the bookswe can look forward to steady stream ofother PCA events.
