Sommerfest 2011Carolinas Regionkicks off the summerwith cars, competitionand camaraderieBy: Catherine BonfiglioForecast for Sommerfest: Hot, humid, andfun. Charlotte served as the location for themulti-car event which is in its 15th year. Membersof the Carolinas Region, encompassingboth North and South Carolina were joined byother PCA members from outside the region,such as Tennessee.The mid-June event began on Friday eveningwith a friendly check-in reception at the Renaissance,which served as the host hotel.Participants greeted old Porsche friends andmade new ones as they enjoyed drinks, greatappetizers, and enjoyed a shopping spree atthe Goodie Store.As Saturday morning dawned, participants inthe Concours event parked in the shade undersome of Charlotte’s glorious old trees to preparetheir cars for the event. The air was heavyand sultry. Was that sweat on the brow fromthe competition or the humidity? More thantwenty cars showed their stuff for the judgesand admirers. Models ranged from 914’s to aGT3 and several cars in the Performance category.Boxsters were well represented and othermodels included: 911’s, 944’s, and 996’s,just to name a few. Results are detailed in otherpages of Tobacco Road, but overall the winnerswere: Skipp Ranson (1989 930 Turbo),Mike Bandarra (1997 993 CS4), Jim Hoffman(2002 996), Mike Jones (2008 997 C4S, JohnBrindle (1992 968), Mike Rich (2006 BoxsterS), Mel Flanagan (1974 914), Harvey Yancey(1996 993).
