Mass Fatality and Human Rights InvestigationsTerrorist actions, mass suicides, and "ethnic cleansings" unfortunately continue to make headlinesconcerning massive losses of life. September 11, 2001 placed terms associated with terrorism among the everydaylexicon of all members of society. Where such news was once limited to commercial aircraft disasters or naturaldisasters, it seems to increasingly include the results of criminal acts requiring the services of multi-disciplinaryteams of forensic experts. This section of the bibliography includes references mostly developed from the work ofexperts at mass graves in places like Kosovo, Rwanda,or Gautemala, or air disasters and explosions around theglobe. Included among these references are those about high speed aircraft crashes involving one or two victims.Even though one or two victims may have been lost, the nature of the scene, trauma and wreckage was similar to thatencountered with larger numbers of victims in commercial aircraft crashes. Similarly, recoveries involving knownpolitical, or human rights type, tortures of single victims are listed below. Whether the loss of life involves thesearch and recovery of a single victim, or those of an entire community, the disciplined and contextual collection ofevidence must be carried out. For this reason, many of the resources listed in sections such as Reconnaissance,Surveying, and Mapping Techniques, or Excavation and Recovery Techniques, or Geophysical/RemoteSensing and Applications are applicable at mass fatality scenes. The use of proper search, recording, and collectionprotocols at many of the above ground settings demonstrates the applicability of formal archaeological techniqueswhich were once thought only relevant in subterranean settings. The reader interested in methodologies at largescenes should review the other sections of this bibliography. This section is divided into the following categories:Air Disasters . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 483Mass Graves . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 491Other Mass Fatalities and General Topics . . . . . . . 500Tree strike information and structural components from an aircraft crash investigationAir DisastersAdams, Bradley J.1999 The Fate of Leon II: The Excavation of a Bay of Pigs B-26 Crash Site in Nicaragua.
