2.3 Land Dispute Resolution2.3.1 Types of ConflictsIt was discovered during the study that the most prevailingconflicts in the communities were: Land encroachment byneighbors, land sharing during succession and land grabbing bypeople claiming to be owners of the land. Encroachment wasvery common in all the three districts. This situation is attributedto the fact that the long stay of people in camps has made itdifficult to locate the exact boundaries of the land. As a resultsome lucrative people take advantage of the situation to encroachon other their neighbors because there no clear evidence toascertain the right boundaries.Conflicts resulting from sharing of land among family memberswere also found to be prevalent with some families wanting toclaim bigger parcels than others. In many of these cases, womenare denied chance the share on family land and this ends up inconflict. There were also incidences of land grabbing reported during thestudy. Because of the existence of customary land largely withoutdocumentation, the wealthier members of the community tend totake advantage of the situation to grab communal land. The chartbelow shows the levels of common land conflicts reported in thethree districts.December 2010 13
