Third stage management:• Three classic signs indicate that the placenta has separated from theuterus:(1) The uterus contracts and rises.(2) The cord suddenly lengthens.(3) A gush of blood occurs.• Delivery of the placenta usually happens within 5-10 minutes afterdelivery of the fetus, but it is considered normal up to 30 minutes afterdelivery of the fetus.• Excessive traction should not be applied to the cord to avoid inverting theuterus• After the placenta is delivered, inspect it for completeness• Oxytocin can be administered throughout the third stage to facilitateplacental separation by inducing uterine contractions and to decreasebleeding.
