67Changing a Needle-free I/V access Connector (NFS1)This procedure should be carried out in combination with routine line flushing. The frequency of the change of the Needle Freeconnector is determined by the number of uses, with reference to the manufacturer’s guidelines.Equipment RequiredNeedle-free I/V access connector.ActionRationaleIn conjunction with line flushing procedure:Maintain aseptic technique at all timesClamp the catheter. Remove the needle free I/V access connector and discard. Usinga piece of sterile gauze soaked in alcohol Chlorhexidine solution, scrub the top thenthe sides of the catheter hub and allow to dry.Alternatively, scrub the hub of the needle free system with Chlorhexidine impregnatedwipe, rubbing from the top of the catheter hub to the sides. Do this three times usingdifferent parts of the wipe, over a period of 30 seconds. Allow to dry.Connect the new needle-free system to the catheter securely.Reduce the risk of infection, to avoidcontaminationThe CINs group hereby assert their moral rights tothe works herein in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1988.Policy review date 01/10/10
