Here aresix tips that can keep your camping finances at a minimum:EXTRA GEAR. Supporting gear items such as batteriescan easily be packed for the trip without taking up much space.1.BRINGThis is important to remember because buying batteries andsimilar supplies such as lantern and stove fuel at the campground ornearby convenience store will cost a premium price. Even the smallestpiece of gear can take a big bite out of the weekend camping budget.AT CAMP. For many campers, cooking over an open fireor using cast iron cooking tools is a highlight of the camping2.COOKexcursion. Including all members of the camping party in thecamp cooking duties is part of the fun. Whipping up some creativecamp food recipes is an enjoyable way to spend an hour withfriends or family. Prepackaged foods are convenientto have on the pantry shelf at home when theopportunity arises for a one-night campinggetaway. But the convenience of prepackagedfoods comes at a high price. Thesame freeze-dried entrée in the colorfulpouch can be matched with fresh ingredientsgrabbed from the fridge or samepantry on the way out the door. The key tosuccessful camp cooking is having a plan —a checklist of ingredients and a basic recipebook, either purchased or compiled notescreated by you or a camping companion.Create a few camp cooking recipes at homeduring leisure times for practice and as ameans to fine-tune a recipe.FREE ACTIVITIES. Findingplenty of activities to provide a varietyof entertainment possibilities that 3.PURSUEdon’t involve a fee is not hard. The mainstays ofcamping pastimes such as hiking, biking, fishing or canoeing are donewithout any additional cost unless bikes and canoes are rented. At the end of camping season,you may be surprised at the list of things that campground workers seeas trash, piled up and around the campground Dumpster. Rememberthat a roll of duct tape and a tube of quality construction adhesive canhandle many campsite breakdowns. Quality camping gear is hard tobeat, especially when camping on the extreme level. But if you are juststarting out in the camping world, then consider duo-layer blanketsjust as good as a sleeping bag. A blanket to sleep on and one to coverup with make an efficient snoozing situation. A flashlight that normallystands at the ready in a closet at home can serve as the campsite’ssecondary light source.CLOSE TO HOME. Or stay home. The backyard campoutthat was a common activity among kids in the 1970s is making5.STAYa comeback. The economy has given Americans the incentiveto find trips close to home to not only save a buck, but to participate inthe worldwide transition to a greener world. State parks and other government-ownedcampgrounds are bargains compared to private campgrounds.They may not have as many organized events as privatecampgrounds do, but they offer a more direct, uncommercializedconnection with nature and natureactivities.THE CHECKLISTS.Checklists can be the6.CHECKmost useful campingtool. She is an Arabianmare named Shibumi, a.k.a. Boomer. Shibumi is a Japanese wordmeaning beautiful, elegant, and understated without pretense. Thiswonderful mare certainly exhibits all of these qualities. She is acousin to our beloved Mindkhi and, like Mindkhi, is sensible andlovely in temperament. Everyone that has had the joy of riding heradores her.HORSE SHOW NEWS…The Malachi ShowTeam had another great show at theOctober PHA horse show. Bo Van Duyswas Grand Champion in the W/T 10 andUnder Division and Carly Orenstein wasReserve Champion. In the W/T 11-17Division, Clare Moran was Grand Champion and Maggie Wigginswas Reserve Champion. We are so proud of our students and theirhorses.4-H NEWS…At the 4-H achievement night, three of Malachi4-Hers won county awards for their officer project entries.Lauren Friedland won for her treasury report and ClareMoran won for the beautiful historian book she presented.Julie won County Council Secretary, a Golden Clover awardand 4-Her of the Year in the intermediate division. More thanhalf of our members won blue ribbons for their projectsbooks that were judged at the 4-H county extension office.Congratulations to all.
