Our Curriculum16Ald<strong>in</strong>e’s curriculum provides a framework forall <strong>in</strong>struction that takes place w<strong>it</strong>h<strong>in</strong> <strong>it</strong>s classrooms.We believe that <strong>it</strong> is important for alladm<strong>in</strong>istrators, teachers, students, and parentsto have an understand<strong>in</strong>g of what eachstudent is expected to learn at specific <strong>in</strong>tervalsdur<strong>in</strong>g their academic career <strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e.Therefore, the curricular program directorsand classroom teachers have collaborated toproduce the Ald<strong>in</strong>e Benchmark Targets.These Benchmark Targets document specificskills that our students must acquire ateach grade level. The specific skills taughtare derived from the state curriculum, theTexas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).The TEKS document broader learn<strong>in</strong>g standardsfor Texas students while the Ald<strong>in</strong>eBenchmark Targets focus on <strong>in</strong>dividual skillsneeded to master these learn<strong>in</strong>g standards.Language ArtsLanguage Arts is a balanced program conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>glisten<strong>in</strong>g, speak<strong>in</strong>g, read<strong>in</strong>g, wr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>g,and visual representations for grades prek<strong>in</strong>dergartenthrough grade 12. Oral languagedevelopment is a major focus <strong>in</strong> the primarygrades. A balance of l<strong>it</strong>eracy activ<strong>it</strong>ies and<strong>in</strong>struction at appropriate developmental levelsprovide a variety of opportun<strong>it</strong>ies forgrowth <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g and wr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>g processes. Asstudents progress they are offered more challeng<strong>in</strong>gopportun<strong>it</strong>ies <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g and wr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>gfor real-life s<strong>it</strong>uations through an abundanceof models and genres of l<strong>it</strong>erature.Foreign LanguageForeign Language is a K-12 program whichoffers the languages of Spanish, French,German, and Lat<strong>in</strong>. Current K-4 programs areavailable <strong>in</strong> French, German, and Spanish. Atthe high school level, five or more levels ofeach language are offered. Students may earnup to 14 hours of college cred<strong>it</strong> <strong>in</strong> dual cred<strong>it</strong>courses or by receiv<strong>in</strong>g an acceptable score onthe College Board Advanced Placement Tests.MathematicsThe mathematics program is designed toprepare students to be productive c<strong>it</strong>izens <strong>in</strong>a fast-chang<strong>in</strong>g world. A full range of courseoffer<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> mathematics, from K<strong>in</strong>dergartenthrough Advanced Placement Calculus, areavailable to every student <strong>in</strong> the district. Tofacil<strong>it</strong>ate a student’s progress, every elementaryand <strong>in</strong>termediate campus offers advancedand gifted and talented classes <strong>in</strong> mathematicsthat allow both enrichment and accelerationbeyond grade-level expectations.ScienceThe elementary and secondary scienceprogram consists of an <strong>in</strong>-depth study ofsystems; properties, patterns, and models;constancy and change; and form and functionthrough scientific pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. Secondaryscience students may earn college cred<strong>it</strong> <strong>in</strong>dual cred<strong>it</strong> courses or by receiv<strong>in</strong>g an acceptablescore on the College Board AdvancedPlacement Tests. In add<strong>it</strong>ion to an extensiveacademic program, students have opportun<strong>it</strong>iesfor campus, district, state, national, and<strong>in</strong>ternational science compet<strong>it</strong>ions.Social StudiesThe PK-12 social studies program builds afoundation <strong>in</strong> history, geography, economics,government, c<strong>it</strong>izenship, culture, science technology,and social studies skills. These conceptsenable students to understand the importanceof patriotism, function <strong>in</strong> a free enterprise society,and appreciate the basic democratic valuesof our state and nation.Bil<strong>in</strong>gual / ESL EducationAld<strong>in</strong>e ISD offers a trans<strong>it</strong>ional bil<strong>in</strong>gual educationprogram from pre-k<strong>in</strong>dergarten to thefourth grade. Students are <strong>in</strong>structed first <strong>in</strong>Spanish and once skills are learned, the skillsare transferred to the English language.W<strong>it</strong>h our model, students will gradually go from80% Spanish, 20% English <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> prek<strong>in</strong>dergartento 50% Spanish and 50% Englishmodel <strong>in</strong> third grade. Our English as a SecondLanguage (ESL) program is from pre-k<strong>in</strong>dergartento twelfth grade. In this program, studentsreceive 100% of their <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> English. ESLteachers provide modifications and work firstw<strong>it</strong>h students on their oral and listen<strong>in</strong>g skillsand then move to read<strong>in</strong>g and wr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>g skills. ESLis typically an <strong>in</strong>clusion model.A unique class that is offered <strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e is ourEnglish Language Inst<strong>it</strong>ute (ELI). This programruns from the seventh grade to twelfth gradeand the ESL teachers work w<strong>it</strong>h studentsfor one year <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive English acquis<strong>it</strong>ion.Students are first learn<strong>in</strong>g oral English and listen<strong>in</strong>gskills, then concentrate on read<strong>in</strong>g andwr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>g skills. Students are <strong>in</strong> these classesfrom three to five hours daily.Special EducationThe special education program <strong>in</strong> the Ald<strong>in</strong>e<strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> currently servesmore than 5,600 students who are identifiedw<strong>it</strong>h various disabil<strong>it</strong>ies such as autism,visual and/or hear<strong>in</strong>g impairments, mentalretardation, multiple disabil<strong>it</strong>ies, physical disabil<strong>it</strong>y,emotional disturbance, learn<strong>in</strong>g disabil<strong>it</strong>y,speech impairment, and traumaticbra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury. Students are eligible to receiveservices if they have been determ<strong>in</strong>ed by anadmission, review and dismissal (ARD) comm<strong>it</strong>teeto have one or more of the aforemen-
tioned disabil<strong>it</strong>ies. Students’ learn<strong>in</strong>g needsand attendant modifications and adaptationsfor learn<strong>in</strong>g materials and <strong>in</strong>structionare identified through the ARD comm<strong>it</strong>tee.Individualized educational plans are formulatedto meet each student’s needs.<strong>District</strong>-wide <strong>in</strong>structional supports for studentsfollow a cont<strong>in</strong>uum of least restrictive (generaleducation classrooms w<strong>it</strong>h m<strong>in</strong>imal specialeducation <strong>in</strong>tervention) to most restrictive(self-conta<strong>in</strong>ed or alternative school) sett<strong>in</strong>gs.All programs provide an array of <strong>in</strong>structionalsupports to meet the diverse learn<strong>in</strong>g needsof all students w<strong>it</strong>h disabil<strong>it</strong>ies. Most services(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g related services) are provided tomost students <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated school sett<strong>in</strong>gs onAld<strong>in</strong>e’s campuses spann<strong>in</strong>g all grade levels.The special education department’s <strong>in</strong>structionaland related services and programm<strong>in</strong>gsupports <strong>in</strong>clude: a parent-<strong>in</strong>fant program forchildren w<strong>it</strong>h visual and/or hear<strong>in</strong>g impairments,early childhood services, <strong>in</strong>clusionservices, an adaptive behavior program forstudents w<strong>it</strong>h emotional disturbance, trans<strong>it</strong>ionalservices, vocational education, lifeskills program, commun<strong>it</strong>y-based <strong>in</strong>struction,commun<strong>it</strong>y-based vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, specialeducation counsel<strong>in</strong>g, occupational andphysical therapy, speech pathology services,services for students w<strong>it</strong>h hear<strong>in</strong>g impairmentsand visual impairments, services forstudents w<strong>it</strong>h severe and/or profound disabil<strong>it</strong>ies,and extensive vocational evaluationservices through the Practical Arts and CareerEvaluation (PACE) program. The special educationdepartment also provides NonviolentCrisis Intervention tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for school staff andfacil<strong>it</strong>ates the development of <strong>in</strong>terventionassistance teams <strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e schools.Career and TechnologyThe Career and Technology Education program<strong>in</strong> the Ald<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> districtis a 7th to 12th grade program which offerscourses <strong>in</strong> the areas of Agriculture Science,Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Education, Career Orientation,Family and Consumer Sciences, HealthScience Technology, Market<strong>in</strong>g Education,Mil<strong>it</strong>ary Science and Leadership, TechnologyEducation, and Trade and Industrial Education.Each of these program areas offer courseswhich students may choose us<strong>in</strong>g a coherentsequence so that they will best benef<strong>it</strong> fromthe skills taught <strong>in</strong> those courses.Several of the Career and TechnologyEducation program areas offer students certificationsor licensures after complet<strong>in</strong>g therequired cred<strong>it</strong>s and/or satisfactorily complet<strong>in</strong>ga certification test. Some of thesecertificates/licenses <strong>in</strong>clude Cosmetology,Emergency Medical Technician, CertifiedNurs<strong>in</strong>g Assistant, Lucent TechnologyCertification, Pace Electronics Certification,A+ Certification, Microsoft Office Specialist,ServSafe, Wheels of Learn<strong>in</strong>g Certificationfor carpentry, weld<strong>in</strong>g, and air cond<strong>it</strong>ion<strong>in</strong>g,CISCO Certification for network<strong>in</strong>g, andNATEF Certification for automotive services.Dual cred<strong>it</strong>, articulated cred<strong>it</strong>, youth apprenticeship,career preparation, and <strong>in</strong>ternshipopportun<strong>it</strong>ies are offered through theCareer and Technology Education program.Hosp<strong>it</strong>al<strong>it</strong>y Services (hotel), Health ScienceTechnology Rotations (medical), and CareerPreparation (cooperative) are a few of the<strong>School</strong>-to-Work programs offered.Visual ArtsThe elementary andsecondary scienceprogram consists ofan <strong>in</strong>-depth study ofscientific pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.The Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD Visual Art program provides aqual<strong>it</strong>y, sequential and cumulative art programfor all students, pre-K<strong>in</strong>dergarten throughgrade 12. Students <strong>in</strong> the Visual Arts have theopportun<strong>it</strong>y to participate <strong>in</strong> various exhib<strong>it</strong>sand contests throughout the year <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g theScholastic Art & Wr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>g Awards, Youth ArtMonth, PTA Reflections, Visual Arts ScholasticEvent, Harris County Fair Future Artists ofAmerica Program, and Houston Livestock Show& Rodeo <strong>School</strong> Arts Compet<strong>it</strong>ion. Studentartwork has been featured <strong>in</strong> state adoptedtextbooks, <strong>School</strong> Arts magaz<strong>in</strong>e, Arts& Activ<strong>it</strong>ies magaz<strong>in</strong>e, Seventeen, Reader’sDigest, Scholastic magaz<strong>in</strong>e, and numerousother periodicals and art books. In add<strong>it</strong>ion totwo-dimensional and three-dimensional studio,students study perceptual awareness, arthistory from the pre-historic to the contemporary,art cr<strong>it</strong>icism, aesthetic awareness andgeneral art appreciation.New programs <strong>in</strong>clude Electronic Media,Media Arts (film and video), and AdvancedPlacement Art History, Studio and Draw<strong>in</strong>g.Perform<strong>in</strong>g ArtsThe Ald<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> providesa perform<strong>in</strong>g arts educational programwhich gives students, regardless of abil<strong>it</strong>y,the opportun<strong>it</strong>y to develop his or her ownunique artistic talents. Students acquire anunderstand<strong>in</strong>g as well as an appreciation ofmulti-cultural music and other arts, through avariety of enriched artistic experiences.The perform<strong>in</strong>g arts curriculum emphasizesthe development of students’ creative capabil<strong>it</strong>ies,growth <strong>in</strong> knowledge and skills relat<strong>in</strong>gto his or her particular artistic endeavor,the unfold<strong>in</strong>g of aesthetic awareness, and the<strong>in</strong>tegration of academic and social skills.The Kodàly method, along w<strong>it</strong>h TexasEssential Knowledge and Skills, is the curriculumimplemented <strong>in</strong> the elementary musicprogram. Intermediate, middle, and highschool perform<strong>in</strong>g arts directors implementTexas Essential Knowledge and Skills.The district’s thirteen magnet school academiesemphasize the perform<strong>in</strong>g arts <strong>in</strong> suchareas as Suzuki str<strong>in</strong>g and piano classes,advanced dance, theatre arts, and musicclasses from pre-k<strong>in</strong>dergarten to high school.The perform<strong>in</strong>g arts organizations presentconcerts, plays, musicals, and dance rec<strong>it</strong>alsthroughout the school year. Well attended,these organizations give our commun<strong>it</strong>y anopportun<strong>it</strong>y to observe and support the studentsat their best.17
