<strong>National</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Safer</strong> <strong>Better</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong> - Health In<strong>for</strong>mation and Quality AuthorityThe <strong>National</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Safer</strong> <strong>Better</strong><strong>Healthcare</strong> have been designed so that <strong>the</strong>y canbe used in all healthcare services, settings andlocations and so that a var<strong>ie</strong>ty of healthcare serviceproviders can use <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> improve <strong>the</strong> quality andsafety of <strong>the</strong> care <strong>the</strong>y provide.Under current law, all healthcare services provided by or onbehalf of <strong>the</strong> HSE (excluding mental health) will be moni<strong>to</strong>red<strong>to</strong> make sure <strong>the</strong>y are following <strong>the</strong>se standards. Thisincludes, but is not limited <strong>to</strong>, hospital care, ambulanceservices, community care and primary care.Having been approved by <strong>the</strong> Minister <strong>for</strong> Health, <strong>the</strong>se<strong>National</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> take immediate effect under <strong>the</strong> HealthAct 2007. In <strong>the</strong> future, it is intended that service providerswill require a licence in order <strong>to</strong> provide healthcare servicesand <strong>the</strong>se standards will be used as <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>for</strong> licensing.4
