City of Wentzville, MissouriEngineering Design CriteriaThe junction chamber, containing the terminal board, shall be sealedfrom the motor by elastomer compression seal (O-rings). Where asealed junction chamber is not used, the motor chamber shall be fittedwith a moisture detection probe. The probe shall be connected to andactivate a warning light in the control panel.Connection between the cable conductors and stator leads shall bemade with threaded compressed type binding posts permanentlyaffixed to a terminal board and thus perfectly leak proof. Each unit shall be provided with an adequately designed coolingsystem. When thermal radiators (cooling fins) are used, they shall beintegral to the stator housing and shall be adequate to provide thecooling required by the motor. When water jackets are used, thewater jacket shall encircle the stator housing. The water jacket shallbe provided with a separate circulation of the pumped liquid. Coolingmedia channels and parts shall be non-clogging by virtue of theirdimensions. Provision for external cooling and flushing shall beprovided. Regardless of the cooling system used, the motor must becapable of pumping under full load continuously with the water levelonly to the top of the volute. Motors with intermittent full load ratingsor motors requiring oil for cooling will not be allowed. When double shrouded impellers are used, a wear ring system shallbe installed to provide efficient sealing between the volute andimpeller. The wear ring shall consist of a stationary ring made ofnitrile rubber molded with a steel ring insert which is drive fitted to thevolute inlet and rotating stainless steel ANSI 304 ring which is drivefittedto the impeller eye. When single shrouded impellers are used, the volute shall be fittedwith an adjustable replaceable front plate. The front plate shall bedesigned with a wave shaped inlet and an outward spiraling V-shapedgroove on the side forcing the impeller to shred and force stringysolids outward from the impeller and through the pump discharge. The volute shall be of single piece design and shall have smooth fluidpassages large enough at all points to pass any size solid which canpass through the impeller. The pump motor cable, installed, shall be suitable for submersiblepump application. Cable sizing shall conform to NEC specificationsfor pump motors.Thermal sensors shall be used to monitor stator temperatures. Thestator shall be equipped with three (3) thermal switches, embedded inthe end coils of the stator winding (one switch in each stator phase). These shall be used in conjunction with and supplemental to externalmotor overload protection and wired to the control panel.4 - 21 Approved 6/10/09
