It is important to note that situations may arise whenrefresher training or supplementary training is required to ensure that confined space work cancontinue to be carried out safely. It is vital for the employer or principal to consider conductingrefresher training or supplementary training on new topics in the following situation:• The risk assessment or entry procedures have been reviewed <strong>and</strong> changed;• Change in duties or appointment of new duties;• Work involving a new type of confined space or new hazards which were neverencountered before; <strong>and</strong>• The personnel involved demonstrated a lack of underst<strong>and</strong>ing of his duties or any safe workprocedure.9.5 Competency of TrainersThe competency of the trainers plays an important part in ensuring that the contents of thetraining are successfully conveyed to the trainees, <strong>and</strong> that trainees are accurately assessed <strong>and</strong>evaluated on their underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the training contents.It is necessary for all trainers to have a thorough working knowledge on the various topics thatthey are training in. Such knowledge could be acquired through a combination of training (bothformal <strong>and</strong> informal), education <strong>and</strong> experience. To ensure relevancy, trainers are required tohave experience in confined space work, either past or current, in the specific industries whichtheir targeted trainees are involved in.64 65
