Aware of our <strong>in</strong>terrelatedness with all be<strong>in</strong>gs, weOknow that harm<strong>in</strong>g others is harm<strong>in</strong>g ourselves.”Our planet is under stress and our civilization is <strong>in</strong> trouble, accord<strong>in</strong>gto L. Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute anda highly honored scientist. 1 <strong>The</strong> majority of scientists agrees thatour planetary climate is heat<strong>in</strong>g up and that there is an urgency toprevent further damage. Increas<strong>in</strong>g temperatures, melt<strong>in</strong>g glaciers,ris<strong>in</strong>g sea levels, expand<strong>in</strong>g deserts, shr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g forests, disappear<strong>in</strong>gplants and animals, erod<strong>in</strong>g soils, and fall<strong>in</strong>g water tables arejust a few signs. <strong>The</strong>se imbalances have the potential to lead to animmense amount of suffer<strong>in</strong>g through droughts, dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g watershortages, fam<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>in</strong>creased occurrences of storms, floods andother climate-related disasters.Our environmental support system is rapidly chang<strong>in</strong>g and itseems that our civilization is mov<strong>in</strong>g toward self-destruction. Weseem to be confronted with the challenge of accept<strong>in</strong>g the deathof our civilization. This <strong>in</strong>cludes accept<strong>in</strong>g our own death. On thespiritual level, we are challenged to practice with confront<strong>in</strong>g ourdeath, to arrive at a po<strong>in</strong>t of “no death, no fear.”Global warm<strong>in</strong>g is not only a biological crisis; it is also anemotional crisis, a psychological crisis, and a spiritual crisis. It isa crisis of me as a person, of us as a society, of us as the humanspecies, of all be<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>habit<strong>in</strong>g planet Earth (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g humans,animals, plants, m<strong>in</strong>erals). But this crisis is an opportunity forfundamental changes <strong>in</strong> our own lives, <strong>in</strong> our situation as humans,and <strong>in</strong> the way we relate to the planet. It is an opportunity topractice <strong>in</strong>terbe<strong>in</strong>g.As spiritual practitioners we can practice awareness of theris<strong>in</strong>g and fall<strong>in</strong>g of all civilizations and acceptance of the com<strong>in</strong>gdeath of our civilization. We can practice with non-fear when fac<strong>in</strong>gglobal warm<strong>in</strong>g. Look<strong>in</strong>g at the scientific proof of the need forurgent action, we can practice non-despair to keep our freshnessfor the needed action. It is time to face and digest what is go<strong>in</strong>gon around us and act accord<strong>in</strong>gly.What We EatI would like to take a closer look at the topic of eat<strong>in</strong>g avegetarian diet and the impact on our environment and globalwarm<strong>in</strong>g. Consum<strong>in</strong>g less meat and dairy is an action many peopleall over the globe can commit to, without hav<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>vest largeamounts of money, and it has a relatively significant impact onglobal warm<strong>in</strong>g.
