With only one previousoff-island game to their credit theyentered the Palm Dairies juniorsoccer tournament organized bythe Lake Hill Soccer Associationand tied for first place.Over 500 young soccer playerstook part in the tournament, whichwas played at Braefoot during thelast week-end of March. The islandteam was accompanied by a goodcrowd of supporters consisting ofparents, family and friends.Although the emphasis is not oncompetition, the youngstersacquitted themselves famously,winning two games and tying athird to place first in their division.Brief shots of the team in action intheir striped jerseys appeared onChannel 6 TV.The Otters first game was onSaturday when, despite having thebest of the play and confining theiropponents to two shots, they couldonly manage a tie. Both games theteam played on Sunday were wonhandily.All participants were awardedmemento trophies by thesponsoring Palm Dairies, who areto be complimented for their partin encouraging junior soccer. TheOtters are part of the on-goingGaliano School of the Artsprogram, so Akasha Forest andmanager-coach Bob Walker are tobe congratulated for the success ofthe team.Galiano Volunteer Firemen 'hada ball' when they played a fun twoballfoursome last week. Thetournament, organized by DonAnderson, was played at theGaliano Golf and Country Club.The trophies created by seniorvolunteer Jim Macdonaldillustrated his interest in modernsculpture and his peculiar sense ofhumour, being at the same timeexotic and erotic.The lowest score was achievedby Don Anderson, partnered byFred Wilson, but as a result of atechnicality the 'Hook and Ladder'Trophy was awarded to runnersupBill Stevens and MichaelSharp. The Forestry Trophy,constructed from meltedstyrofoam into which had beeninserted a pruning of twigs toproduce a monstrosity of whichany flower arranger would bedeeply ashamed, was awarded tothe couple who spent most time inthe bush searching for lost balls.The winners were anonymous. TheWoodpecker Trophy given to theplayer who hit the most trees wasnot ready for presentation, socould not be given to Bill Stevenswho so richly deserved it. Thehigh-score booby prize winners,who shall be nameless, won atrophy which shall also benameless, although it was the mostpractical since it contained twouseable golf balls.Golfers will be familiar with theslice which sends the ball veering tothe right, but the slice perpetratedby Jim Macdonald was a moreliteral one. His drive actually cuthis ball in two. Jim naturallyplayed the half nearer the hole.Side bets became an interestingside-line to the serious golf. FireChief Chester Williams and hisgalianoreportpartner lost the first seven holes.However, on the eighth the playersbet a pint of beer, stimulating thechief to concentrate and win thehole. This alcoholic 'skin game'continued on the ninth with thesame result. Chester retired to theclubhouse to down his winnings.The South Galiano Volunteershave begun trainig for the Fiestawhen they will field a tug-of-warteam. They issue a challenge to anyother island organization toassemble a team of eight to accepttheir challenge.Garden ClubA crowded North Galiano Halllast Wednesday testifed to thepopularity of the Galiano GardenClub. On an excellent show benchone item stood out. Grown by thedoyen of gardeners, Dr. A.A.Kingscote, was a wintercauliflower weighing 314 pounds.For the first time in living memorya show bench entry was awardedthe maximum five points byvegetable judge Margaret Edgar.Tony reported he had a dozensimilar heads grown on four plantswhich had survived their secondwinter.The speaker. Dr. Kay Beamish,who was introduced by BillPeterson, spoke about alpinewildflowers and regions andillustrated her talk profusely with aseries of beautiful slides. TheVancouver Naturalist Societyannually organizes a summercamp, and Dr. Beamish reportedon the one held on TrophyMountain near Wells Gray Park.The Society has recently learnedthat the area they visited has nowbeen incorporated into the park,which is good new, indeed. Campis set up with the aid of a helicoptorwhich brings supplies into the areain which the group will work.Walks may take the naturalists ashigh as the 8,000-foot level.Although the expedition takesplace at the end of July there arestill extensive snow patchesthrough which poke AvalancheLilies and Western Anemonies.Other flowers growing in thiswonderful alpine area includearnicas, lupin, columbine,mimulus, cinque-foil, fleabane,several species of heather andlovely chick-weeds (would we hadthis variety in our gardens insteadof the one that plagues us).Although these names arefamiliar, the species are not all thatsame that grow at our level.Almost all alpine varieties growvery close to the ground because ofthe severe conditions and shortgrowing season. Slides of otheralpine areas were shown includingthe Rockies, northern regions andAustralia.The next garden club meetingwill be on Wednesday, May 13,when Bernard Moore will speak onFlowering Shrubs and GroundCovers.Coming EventsGaliano is gearing itself up forthe Easter weekend. A newdeparture is a Good Fridayecumenical service at St.Margaret's between 1 and 3 pm.The Thrift Shop on Burrill Roadwill be open only on EasterSaturday between 10 am andnoon, to be followed by theWomen's Auxiliary book sale inthe South Fire Hall between 2 and4 pm and the popular annualNorth Galiano Sale of ModernAntiques in their CommunityHall. This begins at 1 pm with anauction followed by the generalsale of treasures from 2 until 3:30pm. There will be coffee, cookies,and Easter chocolates. Allproceeds are in aid of muchneededfire fighting equipment.On Easter Sunday, theReverend Len Pocock will conductAnglican services at St. Margaret'swith Holy Communion at 8 and 11am.
