He was 41 years of age.A film maker, sailor and farmerwho had travelled the world,Begrich worked <strong>in</strong> the 1970s todirect and participate <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gthe Dulc<strong>in</strong>ia, a 46-foot sailboat.He was a skilled boat builder anddesigner, and a cab<strong>in</strong>et-maker whobuilt houses and furniture.Begrich was an outstand<strong>in</strong>g filmmaker with six films to his credit,and had just recently returnedfrom a two-month trip to Guam,Bali, Palau and the Marshall<strong>Island</strong>s.His sudden pass<strong>in</strong>g shocked hismany friends, and he will begreatly missed by all who knewhim. A memorial service for KarlBegrich was held recently at ClamBay Farm.Pender auction raises funds<strong>in</strong> aid of playschool activitiesBy ELEANOR HARRISONEvery spr<strong>in</strong>g the Pender <strong>Island</strong>Playschool holds an auction toraise money to support the schooland make it possible to cont<strong>in</strong>uethe follow<strong>in</strong>g year's activities.This year it was held onSaturday afternoon, April 4, witha large <strong>in</strong>terested number ofPenderites hop<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d just thecast-off treasure from some of theneighbours they needed forthemselves.George Morden did his usual<strong>in</strong>imitable job <strong>in</strong> the role asAuctioneer.Just to give an idea of the varietyof goods available, they rangedfrom an automatic garage door, awork of art, a French fish<strong>in</strong>g net,hay for the farm animals, lots ofw<strong>in</strong>dows for the do-it-yourselfhouse builders, home bak<strong>in</strong>g andmany donations from the stores,garden<strong>in</strong>g work, <strong>in</strong>come tax preparation,d<strong>in</strong>ner for two at tworestaurants and much more.Pender <strong>Island</strong> Playschool has anaverage of 20 families. Theyreceive no grants or subsidies sothe auction is a large source of theiroperat<strong>in</strong>g funds. They do chargetuition fees and each family assiststhe professional teacher dur<strong>in</strong>g theoperation of the school year. Thisis the eighth year the auction hasbeen held.Children aged two, three andfour years attend the playschool. Itis government certified, and acertified playschool teacher isemployed. The school is a memberof the Vancouver <strong>Island</strong> CooperativePlayschool Association,from whom they receive helporganiz<strong>in</strong>g the school.
