Limerick County Council Annual Report 2005Non – National Roads:The Non National Roads Budget, excluding publiclighting, was €19.718M. This comprised of aDepartment of Environment, Heritage and LocalGovernment allocation of €15.365M and €4.353M fromour own resources. Works carried out included:Type of Road Surface RoadDressing ReconstructionRegional 30.06kms 15.5kmsLocal 185.89kms 110.71kmsThe grant allocation for EU Co-Financed schemes was€2.835M in 2005 and six projects received fundingunder this scheme, two of which were St Nessan’sRoad Dooradoyle (R526) and the Herberstown toBallinamona Road R513.Public Lighting:The present stock of 10,000 public lights in Co. Limerickcost €950,000 which covered the associated energy andmaintenance charges. A policy on Public Lighting isbeing considered at the Transportation Strategic PolicyCommittee.ROAD SAFETYEducation:Cinema Road Safety CampaignIn December 2005 Limerick County Council inconjunction with Limerick City Council and theNational Safety Council commissioned a road safetyadvertising campaign in the Omniplex Cinema. Thegrim aftermath of serious crashes and collisions onour roads was vividly presented in an advert designedto grab the attention of the many young people whofrequent the cinema on a regular basis warningeveryone to slow down.This innovative approach to raising road safetyawareness using local landmarks is the first of its kindin the Country and it is hoped that it will lead to othersuch campaigns focusing on different aspects of roadsafety.Cycling Safety TrainingThe Cycling Safety and Skills Programme continuedwith pupils from Croom, Ballyagran, Feenagh,Ardpatrick, Ballybrown, Doon and Bruff NationalSchools, taking part. The feedback from pupils,teachers and parents has been extremely positiveWith such enthusiasm the Council is eager to continueto support this venture in 2006.Junior School Warden SchemeJunior School Wardens at Rathkeale, Kilmallockand Ballylanders continued to provide safe crossingfacilities for their fellow classmates throughout theschool year. Limerick County Council Annual Report 2005The Regional Junior School Warden Final was held inAbbeyside, Dungarvan, Co Waterford in May 2005. Theboys and girls from Ballylanders N.S. took 2nd place inthe competition in their first ever outing with the boysfrom St Joseph’s N.S. Limerick by Cllr. Eddie Wade,Cathaoirleach.5,000 saplings were delivered throughout the Countyto community groups and schools.The section also dealt with a number of dangeroustrees and supervised the inspection and cutting ofsame during the year.30,000 bedding plants were distributed to communitygroups in early summer. The Horticulture Sectionprovided expert advice and guidance for Tidy TownsCommittees and Community Councils around theCounty during the year.The grass-cutting programme continued withapproximately 502 acres of grass cut 32 times. Thisincluded grass cutting in 10 additional housing estates.Specific projects undertaken include:Lough GurMaintenance of the green areas was undertakenthroughout the year, including grass cutting andpruning of trees.Adare Town ParkThe Horticulture Section carried out routinemaintenance of green areas, shrubs andborders.Newcastle WestMaintenance work was undertaken in the Demesne,Newcastle West and 7,000 new trees planted.Landscaping in Housing EstatesThe Horticulture Section carried out landscaping worksin Abbeyfeale; Deerpark, Adare; Caherconlish; Croom;Kilmallock; Monaleen; Pallaskenry; and at the HaltingSite, Dublin Road.Plassey WalkThe control programme on the spraying of GiantHogweed was continued.35
