These includeroad maintenance, housing, water services, andmaintenance of burial grounds, libraries, courthouses,planning clinics, and motor tax facility.Area Committee MeetingsTwelve Area Committee Meetings were held during2005, and Members received eight deputations. LiamGalvin M.C.C. is the current chairman.RoadsExpenditure on maintenance and improvement worksin Newcastle West Roads Area was €5.1m.- Under E.U. Co-Financed Programme, major surfacingworks were carried out on the R.522 Newcastle Westto Castlemahon Cross.- Strengthening works were carried out on forestryroads at Sugarhill, Newcastle West- Works commenced on the new Cork Road Bridge inNovember, 2005.- Major improvement works were carried out on theN.21 at South Quary, Newcastle West, includingsurfacing, drainage and resurfacing works.HousingThe area is responsible for maintenance ofapproximately 550 Local Authority houses.- Central Heating was installed in seventy houses inthe area.- Refurbishment works were carried out on 9 Housesin Sharwood Estate.- Following a series of meetings between CouncilStaff, Local Councillors and Residents, agreementwas reached on regeneration proposals forSharwood/Castleview Estates.- An allocation of €2.5m was approved by theDepartment of the Environment, Heritage and LocalGovernment for the Scheme.Water ServicesIn addition to general maintenance a number of SmallCapital Schemes were completed during the year:- Water Main replacement at Killarney Road,Abbeyfeale and between Mountcollins andTournafulla- Facilities for alum sludge treatment were installedat Newcastle West Water Treatment Plant.- Improvement works at the stores at Newcastle WestSewerage Treatment Plant.74
