Recognition for Moulmein Website and New Media Interest Group The Moulmein New Media Interest Group is a newly formed club for residents interested in keeping abreast of the latest developments in I.T. and internet technologies - and already it is gaining recognition, even by the People’s Association. Moulmein New Media Champion, K C Ang was invited to make a presentation on the Moulmein website at a recent PA-organised Sharing Session on New Media and is also featured in a New Media video presentation circulated to all new media clubs in Singapore. The Moulmein New Media Interest Group is charged with running the Moulmein website and in promoting awareness and usage of new media amongst GROs and residents. The Committee holds workshops and sharing sessions regularly to update members on new media topics of interest. Residents who are interested in joining the New Media Interest Group can contact the Moulmein Constituency office at Tel: 62990565. Around Our Neighbourhood - The Moulmein ‘Bak Kut Teh’ Trial The Balestier Road neighbourhood in Moulmein Constituency is well known for its many good food outlets, most of all, for the many famous ‘bak kut teh’ restaurants that attract discerning diners from near and far. The Moulmein News ‘makan buddies’ recently went on a tour of the Moulmein ‘Bak Kut Teh’ trial to try out what’s on offer at each of these outlets. At the top of the heap must be ‘Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Eating House’ at No. 208 Rangoon Road or often just called ‘Rangoon Road Bah Kut Teh’. Just recently, the owners of this wellknown outlet has decided to give the restaurant a face-lift with better décor, new lighting and ventilation. It also went into a management tie-up arrangement with the Jumbo Restaurant Group. On our recent visit there on a Sunday morning – we arrived to find the place packed to full capacity. We were surprised to see the international mix of the customer base - there were Japanese, Koreans, Taiwanese, Thais and the odd Caucasian. The staff were all so busy rushing around and it took some time for us to get a table and place our orders. When the food came, all were forgiven when we dug into a most delicious meal of succulent pork ribs, very peppery ‘teo-chew’ style bah kut teh soup, liver-and-kidney soup, and braised preserved vegetable and ‘youtiao’. Accompanying the pork rib meal with ‘kung fu’ tea seems to be a must there. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal at Ng Ah Sio – definitely one of the Best in Singapore. Over at Balestier Road, the Moulmein ‘makan buddies’ went to try out the outlet known to have the longest queue every night – the ‘Founder Rou Go Cha’ at No. 347 Balestier. So, on a Friday night the ‘makan buddies’ turned up at the restaurant to find the usual queue – a short one though - as it was 10.00 pm and way past its peak hours. We finally got into the air-conditioned restaurant to find its 20 tables all filled with customers and were shown to a table by the right-side wall – and there’s something about the restaurant’s walls. Every inch of wall space is covered with colourful photographs of owner Mr. Chua Chwee Whatt posing with celebrities from Singapore and overseas. – a testimony to the great popularity the outlet enjoys. Our order was taken and the food came quickly – we had the usual pork rib soup, tau kee, preserved vegetable and ‘youtaio’. The soup was very clear in colour, it tasted peppery but without the strong garlic smell. It was clean-tasting with just a light touch of the pork coming through. The ribs were over-sized ones, firm but tender – so tender we had no problem cleaning them up to bare bones. The ‘tau kee’ was good – tasty, soft, juicy and easy to eat. The preserved vegetables was found to be average, nothing great. We saw lots of braised pork trotters being served at other table – must be good too, unfortunately we did not have any more stomach room for them. All in all, a very good meal in a nice cosy setting. Its no wonder why the restaurant attracts a long queue every night. Its definitely one of the best – a hard fight with Ng Ah Sio at Rangoon Road Besides Founder Rou Go Cha, there are 4 other good ‘bah kut teh’ shops along Balestier Road – all worth a try if you do not wish to wait for service at the other two restaurants : - ‘333 Bak Kut Teh’ at No. 325 - ‘S933 Teo Chew Style Bah Kut Teh’ at No. 333 - ‘Balestier Midnight Bak Kut Teh’ at No. 365 - ‘Zhao Shi Bak Kut Teh’ at No. 395.
