Celebrations in Little India
Hundreds of Moulmein residents and grassroot leaders joined MM Lee
Kuan Yew and the Indian community in celebrating the Indian New Year
on 17th April 2010. The inaugural New Year Celebration was organised
by the Hindu Endowments Board, Little India Shopkeepers’ and Heritage
Association and Moulmein CCC with participation from the following 12
organisations representing various Indian ethnic groups in Singapore:
Bengali Association of Singapore
Karnataka Vaibhava
Maharasthtra Mandal (Singapore)
Singai Tamil Sangam
Singapore Ceylon Tamil’s Association
Singapore Gujarati Society
Singapore Khalsa Association
Singapore Malayalee Association
Singapore Sindhi Association
Tamil Language and Cultural Society
Tamils Representative Council
The Singapore Telugu Cultural Society
It was a joyous occasion as the different ethnic groups came together in
celebration to showcase their unique traditions, music, dance and cuisine.
The two-day celebration brought many visitors to the Serangoon Road
Celebration venue to see an exhibition complete with a replica of an
Indian Village, food stalls with cuisine unique to each Indian sub-group
and stunning cultural performances.
The highlight of the celebration was the visit by MM Lee and other
Members of Parliament from Tanjong Pagar GRC - RADM (NS) Lui Tuck
Yew, Assoc. Prof. Koo Tsai Kee, Ms. Indranee Rajah, Mr. Baey Yam Keng
and Mr. Sam Tan Chin Siong.
MM Lee and his fellow MPs also commemorated the completion of ‘The
New Look’ Tekka Centre which recently had a $10.4 million facelift and
later attended a commissioning ceremony for the new ‘bubble lifts’ at
Blocks 661 to 664, Buffalo Road.
