Indian New Year<br />

Celebrations in Little India<br />

Hundreds of <strong>Moulmein</strong> residents and grassroot leaders joined MM Lee<br />

Kuan Yew and the Indian community in celebrating the Indian New Year<br />

on 17th April 2010. The inaugural New Year Celebration was organised<br />

by the Hindu Endowments Board, Little India Shopkeepers’ and Heritage<br />

Association and <strong>Moulmein</strong> CCC with participation from the following 12<br />

organisations representing various Indian ethnic groups in Singapore:<br />

Bengali Association of Singapore<br />

Karnataka Vaibhava<br />

Maharasthtra Mandal (Singapore)<br />

Singai Tamil Sangam<br />

Singapore Ceylon Tamil’s Association<br />

Singapore Gujarati Society<br />

Singapore Khalsa Association<br />

Singapore Malayalee Association<br />

Singapore Sindhi Association<br />

Tamil Language and Cultural Society<br />

Tamils Representative Council<br />

The Singapore Telugu Cultural Society<br />

It was a joyous occasion as the different ethnic groups came together in<br />

celebration to showcase their unique traditions, music, dance and cuisine.<br />

The two-day celebration brought many visitors to the Serangoon Road<br />

Celebration venue to see an exhibition complete with a replica of an<br />

Indian Village, food stalls with cuisine unique to each Indian sub-group<br />

and stunning cultural performances.<br />

The highlight of the celebration was the visit by MM Lee and other<br />

Members of Parliament from Tanjong Pagar GRC - RADM (NS) Lui Tuck<br />

Yew, Assoc. Prof. Koo Tsai Kee, Ms. Indranee Rajah, Mr. Baey Yam Keng<br />

and Mr. Sam Tan Chin Siong.<br />

MM Lee and his fellow MPs also commemorated the completion of ‘The<br />

New Look’ Tekka Centre which recently had a $10.4 million facelift and<br />

later attended a commissioning ceremony for the new ‘bubble lifts’ at<br />

Blocks 661 to 664, Buffalo Road.
