1 IntroductionAs part of the ACP FISH ll commitment to strengthening fisheries policydevelopment and implementation, a GIS component was included as part of theAquaculture Development Strategy for St Kitts and Nevis. Geographical informationsystem (GIS) is an established powerful mapping tool for spatial analysis in assistingeffective aquaculture management. These include the use of the physical andenvironmental characteristics. The output is intended to assist planning ofaquaculture development. It is recommended that prior to establishment of anyaquaculture operation a proper site assessment be conducted to evaluatesuitability based on its environs.2 Analytical Method implemented2.1 Data SourcesPrimary data were amassed from a variety of sources including the internet. Somedata were made available whereas other data were either not made available orincomplete.Geographical Information System using map data of various scales was used asbase data. These were obtained from national agencies and appropriategovernment statistics. In some cases there was considerable delay or non provisionof data from key sources, including government agencies.Presently there is no National Spatial Repository. Spatial data and statistical datawere obtained from the following agencies through requests from the DMR:• Department of Physical Planning and Environment(DPPE) St Kitts• Department of Physical Planning Natural Resource and Environment(DPPNRE)Nevis• Department of Marine Resources (DMR) St Kitts• Department of Fisheries (DoF) Nevis• St Kitts Waters Services Department• Nevis Water Department• Public internet database PGDMEU Funded A project Implemented by Page 5RTF pg. 177/204
2.2 AnalysisIn preserving the biodiversity on land and sea it was important to identify theecologically sensitive habitats, both terrestrial and marine species. It wasestablished by the aquaculture consultant that there was not an abundance of freshwater supply and existing wells and springs are for municipal consumption.Categories considered for potential aquaculture were:1. Coastal Land aquaculture2.
