To make thisfast response available throughout our facility,including non-medical areas such as the parkinggarage, cafeteria, hallways and lobbies, St. Joseph’swill place AEDs, a simple-to-use defibrillator that isnow found in airports, churches and carried inpolice cars, in locations throughout ourcampus. The AED unit “speaks”instructions and self-regulates theelectric charge, making it possiblefor any nearby person to help savea life. Life-savingcare must be delivered in less than three minutes.Eighty-five code carts are located in key areasthroughout the hospitals to respond quickly whentime is of the essence. To standardize the life-savingequipment found on the carts, and to upgrade tothe most advanced life saving technology available,we have identified the LifePak 20 defibrillator/monitor as the standard of care we must achieve forour patient’s benefit. Its biphasic technologyrequires less electricity, which means less potentialdamage to the heart. Sophisticated and flexible, inaddition to delivering electricity, the LifePak 20 canperform waveform displays, noninvasive pacing,p u l s e o x i m e t r y, EKG monitoring and synchronizedcardioversion to regulate an irregular heartbeat.A gift to purchase one LifePak 20: $10,000Total need: $200,000Emergency Transport CartOperating a hospital as large as St. Joseph’s is notunlike running a small city. Each day thousands ofp a t i e n t ’s, visitor’s, employee’s and support vendorsand personnel are on our large campus.Emergencies are bound to happen, but notnecessarily in an area convenient to emergency care.An ambulance is not always available, orappropriate to traverse the campus, enter walkwaysbetween buildings or navigate the parking garages.When fast and flexible transportation is needed, anambulance golf cart is the preferred way totransport that injured person to care. A sixpassengergolf cart is expertly configured with astretcher mount, stretcher, and storage foremergency response bags for such things as cardiacdefibrillation, airways, medications and monitors. Asecond cart is required to replace an existing vehicleused to transport patients between the emergencydepartment and our First Care facility. For patients with any cardiac history orrisk, an EKG is an essential diagnostic tool. The EKGmeasures and records the electrical impulses thatstimulate the heart to contract, or beat. It canidentify a heart attack, or blockage, and its location,as well as any arrhythmia. Additional monitors areneeded in both the children’s and adult emergencycenters, as well as in the surgical areas of theh o s p i t a l .A gift of one EKG monitor: $15,000Total need: $75,000" 1 7
