We obtained an estimated number of households living within 5km from the 94,911haforest. With the total economic benefit of KES 2,217,780,848, each household accruesKES 23,367 (US$ 312) per year. This amount can be interpreted as the amount theywould be required to obtain from elsewhere in order to obtain the products and servicesoffered by the forest. Individuals who can access the forest can only obtain the directuse values. The forest dwellers, the Ogiek community, only gets 0.5% of direct benefits of forest andalmost a negligible percentage of the total value of the forest. This is as a result of theirsmall population and low extraction levels of forest products. The community has longargued that they do not destroy the forest and their utilization strategy is consistentwith sustainable use of the forest.44
