Orthopædic Hospital
and OHMMHS Forge
Healthy Partnership
For decades, as part of its mission
to advance care for musculoskeletal
patients, Orthopædic Hospital has
helped physicians learn the intricacies
of orthopaedics through residency
and fellowship programs.
Today, Orthopædic Hospital is expanding its
commitment to education by encouraging high
school students to consider becoming doctors and
other healthcare professionals.
The partnership with Orthopædic Hospital
Medical Magnet High School offers tremendous
potential for children from both the inner city
and the greater Los Angeles area. The high school,
which opened in the fall of 2004, celebrated its
first graduating class in June 2007. Many graduates
have committed to pursuing a wide variety of
healthcare careers, including medicine, nursing,
research and technology.
The students radiate enthusiasm, according
to Barbara Murray, director of Volunteer Services.
Many volunteer substantial hours each year at
Orthopædic Hospital to assist patients as well as
gain exposure to the full spectrum of healthcare
careers.
Being part of a program like this has
been incredibly rewarding, according
to Barbara. “Not only does it
offer a world of opportunities for the
kids, but we’re helping to educate the
healthcare professionals of the future,” she said.
A sampling of projects that link Orthopædic
Hospital with the high school students appears on
the following pages.
