Orthopædic Hospital’s
Mission Remains While
Opportunities Grow
A
decade into its alliance with UCLA,
Orthopædic Hospital has taken
stock to determine whether the historical
mission of providing charity
care, conducting research and
promoting education will remain viable in years
to come.
The conclusion: A resounding yes.
“Last year we reached a turning point after having
achieved a number of milestones,” explained
James V. Luck Jr., MD, chief executive officer and
medical director. “We had opened the Outpatient
Medical Center downtown to record numbers
of patients. We had relocated our pediatric and
adult inpatient surgeries from downtown to the
new Orthopædic Hospital at Santa Monica–UCLA
Medical Center. We were preparing to unveil the
new Orthopædic Hospital Research Center on
the UCLA campus. It seemed like a good time to
reexamine our mission.”
The responsibility for forging strategic
goals fell to a 10-member task
force consisting of representatives of
the OH Board of Directors, the OH
Foundation Board of Trustees and
management. Days of discussion led the panel to
determine that Orthopædic Hospital’s purpose
and priorities remain the same and that the future
looks incredibly bright.
“Why we exist has not changed,” Dr. Luck
said. “We exist to provide outstanding care for
patients with musculoskeletal disorders, to care
for children regardless of ability to pay, and to
advance care worldwide for all musculoskeletal
patients through medical education and scientific
research.
“What has changed is the ‘we.’ We are now
the team of Orthopædic Hospital and UCLA.
Together we have the potential to expand all our
orthopaedic programs. We already attract hemophilia
and musculoskeletal tumor patients from
throughout the U.S. We will establish centers
of excellence in other orthopaedic subspecialties.
The musculoskeletal research at Orthopædic
OH’s Vision
Orthopædic Hospital, in partnership
with UCLA Orthopaedics, will advance its
national leadership role and be at the forefront
of advancing care for patients with
musculoskeletal disorders (setting the standard
for others to emulate) — with pediatric
orthopaedics as its priority.
Orthopædic Hospital’s strategic plan
builds upon its clinical, research and education
leadership and its goal, in partnership
with UCLA, is to be recognized as “best in
class” for:
• Pediatric orthopaedics
• Joint replacement
• Spinal problems
• Musculoskeletal tumors
• Hemophilia
• Trauma
• Sports medicine
