26 education hOLiDAY eVeNTS Students become particularly involved in holiday activities. In 2007, they held a drive and collected more than 200 toys for patients and their families. When California Highway Patrol officers and Santa arrived on motorcycles, students helped organize toys for distribution and helped pass them out alongside Santa. Students photographed children, sang Christmas carols and played with the children. For another large toy party, students assisted by sorting through 4,000 toys. AcADemic SUPPORT While Orthopædic Hospital’s primary commitment to OHMMHS centers on healthcare, assistance assumes other forms. “Last fall, I got a call from the faculty member who was working as a coach for the mock trial team,” Barbara said. “It was their first year. She asked if we knew any lawyers who might work with students after school to prepare them for the competition.” Barbara made several phone calls. Word went out to Orthopædic Hospital’s attorneys at the law firm of Latham & Watkins, several of whom volunteered and helped the team do well in its first competition. Orthopædic Hospital also supports OHMMHS with its academic decathlon. “They need assistance in certain areas,” Barbara said. “Our music therapist has gone over to help them with music, because the teacher who serves as the coach believes she doesn’t have enough personal knowledge to lead the team in the right direction. We help out wherever we can.” ScieNce fAiR Every year, Orthopædic Hospital researchers and other staff members help OHMMHS students with their science fair projects and act as judges. SPeciAL TOURS Many students relish the opportunity to participate in special tours. Recently, for example, biomechanical engineering students were invited to visit Orthopædic Hospital’s research facilities to see how investigators actually work on research.
iNTeRNShiPS Last year, six students participated in a successful internship program. They worked for eight weeks on special projects and received stipends. “These were wonderful opportunities for the students,” Barbara said. “It was competitive. They had to fill out applications and be interviewed before being chosen. At the end we had each student prepare a presentation for some of the staff members who were involved in the internship program. The students did an amazing job.” One student joined a knee study project in physical therapy. Two worked in biomechanical engineering and partnered with engineers who had volunteered in their physics class and had helped students building rockets. Students also were paired with engineering students from California State University, Los Angeles to build an experimental merry-go-round for patients who are wheelchair bound. “This has been an exciting project,” Barbara said. “The merry-go-round will be put into our universally accessible playground. Two students continued to work over the summer to devise the prototype. They did a lot of investigative work.” Two students worked with Orthopædic Hospital researchers on special projects. One was a colloid while the other involved stem cell research. Finally, one intern assisted on an information technology project for the Orthopædic Hospital Foundation. Artin M.
