For a sense of the magnitude of today’s
Orthopædic Hospital, just check out

Launched in May 2007 after more
than a year in the making, the new site offers
visitors brief but comprehensive views of everything
happening at Orthopædic Hospital. The
homepage highlights the flourishing children’s
clinic at the Outpatient Medical Center and the
new Orthopædic Hospital Research Center on the
UCLA campus, while providing links to the new
hospital under construction in Santa Monica and
volunteer opportunities.
The site employs clean graphics and a simple
color palette consisting of a grayish blue as the
primary color along with olive green, plum and
mushroom as accents.
The homepage offers nearly two dozen links
to topics of interest and a search function. A section
that describes Orthopædic Hospital’s mission
provides links to descriptions of orthopaedic care,
research and education. A section for patients,
available in English and Spanish, offers links to
frequently sought-after information. A sidebar
column presents buttons for information about
Orthopædic Hospital, medical services, research,
giving, support groups, volunteering and news
and events. Each of those sections, in turn, links
to other pages for more detailed information.
Features that speak to the interactivity of the
new site are the “What’s New” and the “Spotlight”
sections. Each box can cycle through several stories
and can be updated as events warrant.
The site has drawn high praise from
users and led to a significant increase
in traffic, according to Adrienne
Lao, manager of Major Gifts at the
Orthopædic Hospital Foundation
and website coordinator.
“We didn’t want the website to be just a placeholder
on the Internet,” she said. “We wanted a
website that was responsive and all-inclusive. This
is such a watershed period, we needed a website
that better captured the spirit of Orthopædic Hospital
in the 21st century.”
