2 viewpoint Taking Orthopaedic Education to New Levels By James V. Luck, Jr., MD • Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director • Los Angeles Orthopædic Hospital This is an incredibly exciting time to be working in orthopaedics. For nearly 100 years, we at Orthopædic Hospital have been committed to improving care for people with all types of orthopaedic problems through patient care, research and education. Today, orthopaedic surgery represents one of the most competitive residencies across the United States. By combining the extraordinary academic credentials of both UCLA and Orthopædic Hospital, I believe that we soon will have the nation’s most sought-after orthopaedic residency. Education, of course, has long been part of the core mission of Orthopædic Hospital, along with providing charity care and advancing scientific research. Our medical residency program began with just a handful of residents in the 1940s under the guidance of our founder, Charles LeRoy Lowman, MD; Alvia Brockway, MD; and Ward Rowland, MD. When my father, J. Vernon Luck Sr., MD, became medical director in 1955, the residency program was down to a single resident. Because one of my father’s priorities was education, he built one of the most robust and sought-after training programs in orthopaedics nationally. Some people have said he almost singlehandedly reinvented professional medical education. He challenged medical students and residents to be more than what he termed “surgical technicians.” He developed the Orthopaedic Resident Physician-In-Training Examination used in U.S. orthopaedic residency programs to assist residents and their professors in identifying gaps in their knowledge and assure uniform high standards. After my father completed his tenure in 1967, the residency program continued along a similar path until Augusto Sarmiento, MD was named medical director. Dr. Sarmiento was also the chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Southern California, which oversaw the Los Angeles County residency program. He combined that program with the OH residency under the auspices of USC. Orthopædic Hospital continued to play a significant role in the training of these residents but no longer had responsibility for the administration of the program as a whole. In the first years of the 1990s under the administration of Blair C. Filler, MD, director of Medical Education, other residencies began
sending residents to OH for training in pediatric orthopaedics, joint replacement and musculoskeletal tumors. G. June Marshall, MD, director of Research at Orthopædic Hospital, was devoted to education and established research rotations for third- and fourth-year medical students from universities across the United States. Having learned from my father and been inspired by his devotion, I made education one of my priorities and ensured that it was a significant part of our discussions with UCLA in the formation of our strategic alliance in 1998. As part of that commitment to education, I served eight years on the Residency Review Committee, the last two years as chair. The Residency Review Committee for Orthopaedic Surgery, a part of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, oversees and accredits all orthopaedic residencies and many orthopaedic fellowships in the United States. Subsequently, I was elected a director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and served as its president in 2005 and 2006. This organization is responsible for establishing the curriculum for orthopaedic education and certifying and recertifying orthopaedic surgeons in the United States. viewpoint In March 2007, I became program director of the renamed Orthopædic Hospital/UCLA residency. Working with outstanding faculty and administrators at UCLA and OH, it is our goal to make this the best orthopaedic surgery residency in the nation. Each year, two of our residents take off a year to do basic research in the laboratories. The opening of the new Orthopædic Hospital Research Center on the UCLA campus in Westwood significantly enhances our residents’ education experience. This Center offers one of the greatest opportunities for discovering advancements in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases in the world. Residents who participate in this opportunity will be positioned to become the leaders in academic orthopaedics of the future. Applicants for the Orthopædic Hospital/UCLA residency hail from the top educational institutions in the country and represent remarkably accomplished young men and women. This year we had 450 applicants for our six first-year residency positions. Most of these applicants were in the top quartile of their medical school classes. Our goal is to take that extraordinary talent and provide it with the highest quality education possible. 3
