According to company CEO
Kevin Kennedy, 1350 positions
will be removed from the payroll,
including 850 in North
further streamlining of its operations
in the pipeline, the
Emcore's GaN
spin-off raises
$6 million fund
Emcore has spun off the development
of its GaN power device
technology in the form of a
new company called Velox
Semiconductor. The firm, in
which Emcore holds a 20%
stake, has already raised $6
million from three venture capitalists
– DCM-Doll Capital
Management, SAS Investors
and DFJ New England. Velox
has been set up to commercialize
Jenoptik Diode Lab to
construct plant
Jenoptik Diode Lab GmbH of Berlin plans to
construct a local facility for the production of
optoelectronic semiconductor components, with
particular focus on semiconductor materials for
cal supply applications, and is
headed up by CEO Tom Hierl.
Hierl previously set up
Quantum Epitaxial Designs
where he was CEO until the
company’s merger with UKbased
epiwafer supplier IQE in
1999. Emcore CTO Richard
Stall is also on the Velox
Aixtron predicts
annual loss with
subdued outlook
MOCVD and atomic layer
deposition (ALD) equipment
provider Aixtron posted sales
of EUR22.2 million and a net
loss of EUR0.9 million in the
first three months of 2005. As
well as Aixtron’s sales being
noticeably lower than those
reported for the equivalent period
last year (EUR26.6 million),
orders were also down
by 25%. However, the company
does predict an increase in
full-year revenue for 2005 to
EUR160 million-EUR170 million.
But while last year Aixtron
made a EUR7.1 million profit
on total sales of EUR140 million,
the company is now
expecting to record a EUR10
million loss in 2005 – although
this is a figure that will include
Optics
costs attributable to the acquisition
of Genus.
OLED market
growing rapidly,
Samsung in the
lead
The worldwide revenue for
OLED panels expanded to
$408 million in 2004, up 63%
from $251 million in 2003,
according to a report from
iSuppli. Thirty-one million
OLED panels were sold in
2004, nearly twice as many as
the 16.8 million units sold in
2003. Driven mainly by the
growth in demand for OLEDs
as an alternative to LCDs for
displays in mobile phones, the
OLED market is expected to
grow to $615 million in 2005,
up 50.7% year-on-year. Unit
sales are expected to nearly
double again in 2005 to reach
60 million units. By 2011, the
OLED market is forecast to
rise to 341 million units, representing
a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of 34%,
while the market revenue will
grow to $2.9 billion, or 29%
CAGR. Korea's Samsung SDI
emerged as the dominant
OLED supplier in 2004, with
44% of the market, driven by
internal sales to Samsung's
mobile-phone business.
diode lasers. Covering a total of 1800 sq m, the
complex will house offices, R&D laboratories and
the production of 3-in. GaAs wafers. It will include
500 sq m of cleanrooms to support the production
of semiconductor laser diode chips. Construction
of the plant is scheduled to begin this spring. The
project is expected to result in 40 new positions.
