first set of LED luminaires to<br />

be fully compliant with<br />

California Energy Commission<br />

Title 24 energy codes and the<br />

Environmental Protection<br />

Agency's Energy Star 4.0<br />

standard scheduled for release<br />

Samsung Electronics has exhibited<br />

a number of solid-state<br />

display technologies at the<br />

Society for Information Display<br />

(SID) 2005 conference in<br />

Boston. These include a 40inch<br />

OLED display, billed as<br />

the world's largest single-sheet<br />

glass plate OLED; a 46-inch<br />

LED backlight LCD TV with<br />

107 percent NTSC color reproduction,<br />

and an LED backlight<br />

LCD for 2.22-inch mobile<br />

phone displays that uses RGB,<br />

rather than white LEDs.<br />

Matsushita Electric Industrial<br />

Co. has developed a core<br />

device for use in ultra-speedy<br />

fiber-optic communications<br />

capable of transmitting 100<br />

gigabits of data, the equivalent<br />

of 2.5 movies, per second.<br />

This type of optical communications<br />

is expected to come<br />

into commercial use around<br />

2010. The Tokyo-Osaka trunk<br />

line for optical communications<br />

currently offers data throughput<br />

of 10 gigabits per second,<br />

which is expected to rise to<br />

100 gigabits around 2010.<br />
