Permlight Products has introduced
a complete line of LEDbased
residential luminaires
for the new home construction
market. The company claims
that these will be installed in
new homes in fall 2005. The
company also says that the
EnbrytenLED line is also the
first set of LED luminaires to
be fully compliant with
California Energy Commission
Title 24 energy codes and the
Environmental Protection
Agency's Energy Star 4.0
standard scheduled for release
this fall.

Samsung showcases
LED
backlights, first
40-inch OLED
Samsung Electronics has exhibited
a number of solid-state
display technologies at the
Society for Information Display
(SID) 2005 conference in
Boston. These include a 40inch
OLED display, billed as
the world's largest single-sheet
glass plate OLED; a 46-inch
LED backlight LCD TV with
107 percent NTSC color reproduction,
and an LED backlight
LCD for 2.22-inch mobile
phone displays that uses RGB,
rather than white LEDs.

Matsushita
develops core
device for ultrafast
fiber-optic
communications
Matsushita Electric Industrial
Co. has developed a core
device for use in ultra-speedy
fiber-optic communications
capable of transmitting 100
gigabits of data, the equivalent
of 2.5 movies, per second.
This type of optical communications
is expected to come
into commercial use around
2010. The Tokyo-Osaka trunk
line for optical communications
currently offers data throughput
of 10 gigabits per second,
which is expected to rise to
100 gigabits around 2010.
