1957 - Programme expanded every year and a population of 165.57 million was effectivelyprotected.1958 - Encouraged by the success of NMCP, the Government of India changed the strategyfrom control to eradication and the National Malaria Eradication Programme (NMEP) was launched.1961 - Epidemiological surveillance initiated.1962 - Many areas entered into consolidation and maintenance phases after annualindependent appraisals by international teams.1966 - 50% areas of the country from where malaria was practically eradicated entered intomaintenance phase on fulfilling technical criteria. The vertical organization of NMEP was withdrawn andpublic <strong>health</strong> services were made responsible <strong>for</strong> maintaining malaria free status.1968 - Due to extensive malaria outbreaks in consolidation and maintenance phases, apopulation of 91 million was reverted back to attack Phase <strong>for</strong> regular spray.1977 - Modified Plan of Operation implemented with change in strategy from eradication tocontainment.
