Volunteer SpotlightClaire McHughClaire McHugh of Broomall has been volunteeringat the Surrey Thrift Shop since 2007.She had been babysitting her grandchildrenevery day, and with the last one off to school, she was looking for something to do. Claire sawa flyer at St. Pius Church advertising the ThriftShop’s grand opening and decided to check itout. Her intention was to clean out her houseand donate items to the shop. But when she arrivedat the shop, she thought it looked like a funplace to be and spoke to Ria Blascheck who wasthen one of the shop managers--and who is still aSurrey volunteer. Claire remembers meeting Riaon Wednesday and filling out a volunteer application, being interviewed on Thursday, and startingin the shop on Friday.Claire spends two days a week at the ThriftShop. She works at the register, puts out merchandiseand sometimes crawls on the floor toclean out under tables, but her favorite activity iskeeping the book room tidy and organized. TheThrift Shop receives and sells thousands of bookseach year, and Claire has probably sorted andorganized most of them. She takes pride in makingsure that the book room is stocked with asmany books as possible and that they are sortedinto fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks and children’sbooks. Many customers have told us that wehave the nicest library of any of the shops theyfrequent – most shops don’t sort the books!Besides volunteering and reading, Claire loves tospend time with her husband, three children andfive wonderful grandchildren. Thank you Claire!Geriatric Care Management:Finding Services to Assist YouGeorge is widowed and his only daughter lives inCalifornia. Perhapsin past years you have received or given USSavings bonds as a gift for a special event and youare wondering if the bond should be cashed in. Ifyou have forgotten about a bond and maybe cameacross it during your spring cleaning, you are notalone. Billions in savings bonds have matured andnever been cashed in. Matured bonds no longerearn interest, thus they are actually losing valueover time due to inflation.7To find out the value of your savings bond andwhether the bond is still paying interest, go to theUS government’s website for savings bonds,www.treasurydirect.com, and click on the toolstab. If you don’t have a computer, you can ask afamily member or friend to help you or you can callTreasury Direct at 800-553-2663. The phone numberis for paper savings bonds.
