Characteristics of <strong>Airmobile</strong> <strong>Operations</strong><strong>Airmobile</strong> operations are similar to other ground combat operations but differ in these respects:a. <strong>Airmobile</strong> operations usually are executed in lightly defendedareas or after a preassault nuclear or nonnuclear preparation withthe advantage of initial tactical surprise.6. <strong>Airmobile</strong> forces can land directly on or adjacent to theirobjectives.c. <strong>Airmobile</strong> forces are particularly vulnerable during landingand assembly.d. The types and amounts of heavy equipment that can be takeninto the objective area are limited.e. <strong>Airmobile</strong> forces have the ability to readily conduct operations in otherwise inaccessible areas./. <strong>Airmobile</strong> forces are particularly vulnerable to enemy armordue to their limited ground mobility and firepower in the objective area.g. <strong>Airmobile</strong> operations require command of the air in the objective area and suppression of enemy ground fire.h. Adverse weather restricts airmobile operations more thanground mobile operations.4. Concept of Employmenta. <strong>Airmobile</strong> forces are employed in furtherance of a groundcombat effort. Their use permits the commander to take advantageof the speed and flexibility of Army aircraft in accomplishing awide variety of tasks. The capability of conducting airmobileoperations enables the commander to(1) Pose a constant threat which may cause the enemy todivert combat forces to maintain a strong posture in rearareas to protect vital installations and hold criticalterrain.(2) Overcome distances and to bypass barriers and enemydefenses.(3) Extend radically the area over which he can exert hisinfluence.(4) Deploy his forces more effectively by holding highlymobile reserves in dispersed areas.6.
