Current Affairs PDF June 2012 Page 82Legendary Cuban Boxer Teofilo Stevenson died of heart attack on 13 June 2012 at the age of 60.An amateur boxer he never turned professional in his 14-year long career. Stevenson, who wonhis first gold at the 1972 Munich Games, and went on to win two more golds at the 1976Montreal and 1980 Moscow Games, ruled the game for nearly 14 years. He was the first fighterto win the Olympic gold medal in the same division three times. Stevenson was denied a chanceof a fourth medal after Cuba joined the Soviet boycott ofthe 1984 Los Angeles Games.The legendary boxer, who quit the game in 1986, hademerged victorious in a record 302 bouts out of 321 thathe played. Subsequently, he served as a trainer and officialwith Cuban boxing federation mentoring Felix Savon, whoalso like his trainer went on to win three Olympic golds(1992, 1996, 2000).A fervent patriot, Stevenson refused to contest a highly lucrative bout against then-worldheavyweight champion Muhammad Ali after the 1976 Montreal Games. DipankarMukherjee was born in June 1943 atCalcutta in West Bengal. A brilliantstudent throughout his student life, hegraduated in electrical engineering fromBanarasHe was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, in April 1994from West Bengal as a CPI (M) member. Hussain, a member of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), was one of those very fewofficers who served the Indian Foreign Service despite not being the member of the covetedservice.In his illustrious career with the Indian Administrative Service, Hussain served in variouscapacities such as the Secretary of Ministry of Heavy Industries, Commerce Secretary andChairman IIFT. In 1985, he was appointed the Member ofPlanning Commission of India. Subsequently, he served asAmbassador to the US between 1990 and 1992.In 1988, Hussain was awarded with Padma Bhushan, the thirdhighest civilian award given by the Indian Government.Hussain in his long standing career oversaw several importantassignments. Some of his notable assignments include, theMember of International Panel on Democracy & Developmentof UNESCO, Special Rapporteur to UN on Freedom of Opinionand Expression for 9 years, Member of the ConstitutionReview Commission of India, Member of the Prasar BharatiBoard, and Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, New York and U.N Adviser on Turkeyon Community Development.NIA FOUNDING DIRECTOR RADHA VINOD RAJU PASSED AWAYRadha Vinod Raju, the founding director of National Investigation Agency (NIA) died at the ageof 62 on 21 June 2012. Raju was also a key member of thespecial investigation team which investigated theassassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.Born in Kochi on 27 July 1949 Raju started his career as anofficer in the Bank of India. Subsequently, in 1975, hejoined the J&K cadre of Indian Police Service. In his longillustrious career as an IPS officer, Raju served on varioustop positions such as, senior superintendent of police ofJammu district, deputy inspector general of South Kashmir Range and inspector general ofJammu.Raju also headed the special investigation team (SIT) which probed the assassination of formerIndian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991.
