The report noted that food securitymust be at the top of the priority list of country’s policyif the world has to provide food to its seven billionpopulations - a number expected to cross nine billionThe report, based on a study conducted by a team of researchers from Swedish Institute ofFood & Biotechnology and the Food and Agriculture Organisation, pointed out that anastounding 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted everyyear. A staggering 220 million tons of food iswasted every year in North America and Europealone, the report figured out.The UNEP report seeks to draw the attention ofglobal community on key environmental aspects, which are largely being ignored by economicactivities like overfishing, unsustainable water use and other human activities.
