Handling qualities is defined as flying qualities which allow amission to be accomplished with ease and precision [Ref. 7]. Feedback of the aircraftstates to the pilot is an important quantity to provide good handling qualities. Feedbackthrough the controls is important enough to be included in the MIL-STD-1797 [Ref. 7]Military Standard Flying Qualities of Piloted Aircraft. However little information isavailable about which states to feed back and how to cue the pilot through the controls. The MIL-STD-1797 provides only basic guidelines for the force gradients and one statein each control axis to be fed back (Table 1).Table 1 Aircraft control Stick and Pedal FeedbacksAxis Feedback state Force Gradient Maximum ForcePitch Nz 8 lbf/g 50 lbfRoll Roll Rate — p 1 lbf/deg/sec 25 lbfYaw Side Slip (Beta) 1 lbf/deg 100 lbfThe MIL-STD-1797 was used to set up the basic feedback for the PhEagle I. Twotypes of pilot induced oscillation (PIO) can be predicted using batch and fixed base, pilotin-the-loop,simulation [Ref. 5]. A PIO is a phenomena where the pilot sends commandsto the plane in a cyclical fashion where his input ends up sending exactly the wrongcommand to the airframe from the desired response. An example of this is trying to13
