UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN PRIVATE SECTORMANAGEMENTGeneral InformationQualifications in private sector management can be obtained in severalfields of study. These are all accommodated within the degreeBaccalaureus Commercii (B.Com.). This is a highly regarded andcomprehensive basic management degree and is structured foreconomic and management positions (especially in the private sector)academic careers at universities and universities of technology, or acareer as a teacher.While a B.Com. is directed at economic and management positionsin the private sector, it is also an excellent degree for a career in thepublic sector. (Compare the Undergraduate Programme in PublicSector Management.)The degree is structured around the core subjects of Economics(being the root science), Business Management (includingMarketing and Financial Management), Industrial Psychology andAccounting, with a wide range of supporting subjects to choosefrom. B.Com. (General Management) offers a broader option tostudents who would like a solid general management background,but who prefer not to specialise too soon.Special interests can be accommodated as there is a wide range ofspecialities from which to choose within the B.Com. degree, as indicatedin the list below.B.Com. B.Com. (Accounting) is also available and falls within theProgramme: Training of Accountants.The curricula for the normal three year B.Com. degree in each fieldof study is explained in the following section. Each degree isstructured around a solid core of economic and managementsubjects. The foundation which is laid in the first year of study - andwhich is the same for all the degree options – is strengthened in thesecond and third years of study, whilst also systematically becomingmore focused in each field of specialisation.The distinctive aspects of each degree are clearly set out, so thatthe prospective students can make a well informed choice beforedeciding on a particular field of study. It is possible to change thefield of study during the module of a study period. This might meanhowever, that extra modules need to be taken in order to complywith the requirements for a new degree chosen.The number of semester modules normally required for a B.Com.degree, is 30. As a rule three major subjects at third-year level arerequired.Basic modules in computer literacy (BRS111 and BRS121) formpart of all the curricula, as well as modules in Afrikaans for theProfession or Business English. The language proficiency modulesare not only aimed at giving the student the necessary skills forsuccessful academic study, but will also prove to be valuable in amanagement position.
