Course DescriptionsStudents assess sampling techniques and table construction.SOC-890 Service Learning, 1 cr.The Service Learning field experience offers students a hands-onopportunity to explore professional and technical aspects within anorganization. Through this Service Learning project the studentmust be involved with a meaningful project, have an academic connection,and have an opportunity to reflect on the experience uponits completion.SpeechSPC-101 Fundamentals of Oral Communication, 3 cr.Development of the basic skills involved in variety of speakingsituations, including oral presentations and interpersonal speaking.Emphasis is placed on organization, voice, articulation, listening,non-verbal communication, critical thinking, and methodsof dealing with speech comprehension.SPC-112 Public Speaking, 3 cr.This course helps students develop confidence in bothprofessional and personal presentation skills. Topics includeaudience analysis in both professional and personal presentationskills, critical thinking, organization, effective listening, audiencemessage retention, and the use of visual help. Courserequirements include that the student be actively engaged inresearching appropriate related material from newspapers,periodicals, or the web. This research will enhance the studentslearning and develop deeper insights into the course topics. Theinstructor will define specific course related assignments thatrequire active research efforts as a requirement for successfulcourse completion.SPC-121 Interpersonal Communication, 2 cr.Designed to improve ability in speaking to others in interpersonalsituations such as conversation, relationships, business, andgroup discussions.SPC-122 Interpersonal Communications, 3 cr.Examines how humans communicate in one-on-one situationsthrough personal and professional relationships.Surgical TechnologySUR-121 Surgical Techniques I, 6 cr.This course provides the student with an orientation to the surgicaltechnology profession and operating room theory. Principlesand concepts of physical environment, aseptic technique, sterilizationand disinfection, instrumentation, equipment and suppliesand their role in surgical case management along with all othertechniques associated with the scrub role are presented.Students will be introduced to the surgical environment during a16 hour observational experience within a surgical department.SUR-122 Intro to Surgical Technology, 4 cr.This course will allow students to apply principles learned duringSurgical Techniques I lecture in a simulated surgical suite for thepurpose of practicing and learning basic skills outlined in theobjectives of this course. Emphasis is on instrumentation andfundamental surgical skill development. The transportation of thesurgical patient, positioning, patient preparation, and draping arepresented. Students are required to demonstrate competence inthe areas discussed in the course outline in order to advance topracticum.SUR-123 Patient Care Concepts, 2 cr.This course intends to introduce the student to the practice of82surgical patient care. Preoperative and postoperative routines aswell as some of the responsibilities of the surgical technologist inthe circulating role are discussed. The bio-psycho-social needsof the patient are addressed in addition to patient identification,review of the chart, documentation, surgical transport and positioning,skin preparation, urinary catheterization, specimen care,wound classification, vital signs, hemo-dynamics, monitoring,and discharge planning. The student will learn appropriateresponse to legal, ethical, and moral issues, as well as emergencysituations and personnel safety practices as outlined byOSHA Standards.SUR-222 Surgical Techniques II, 2 cr.This course is taught in conjunction with Surgical Procedures.This course helps further refine knowledge obtained in SurgicalProcedures by offering the student study projects that they canapply information relating to surgical anatomy, physiology,pathophysiology, diagnostic interventions, instrumentation andequipment, and procedural steps.SUR-223 Surgical Procedures, 6 cr.This course provides the student with the preoperative theory,procedural anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosticinterventions, procedural considerations, instrumentation, andsteps related to various surgical specialties. Specialties include:diagnostic, general, obstetrics and gynecology, genitourinary,ear, nose and throat, ophthalmic, plastic, orthopedic, peripheralvascular, cardiovascular, neurosurgery. Students will incorporatesafe perioperative patient care techniques, medical terminology,and pharmacology to each procedure.SUR-227 Surgical Procedures Lab, 2 cr.This course will allow students to apply principles learned duringSurgical Procedures lecture in a hands-on laboratory setting.Students will further redefine skills related to the three phases ofcase management as they apply to each surgical specialty andits specific cases.SUR-420 Pharmacology for Surgical Tech, 2 cr.This course reviews basic math and science skills. It provides anintroduction to surgical pharmacology and emphasizes theclassifications of medications used in surgery. The student willbecome familiar with the general terminology used withmedication application, the use of drugs in the care of surgicalpatients, and the principles of anesthesia administration forroutine cases and emergency procedures.SUR-430 Microbiology - Surgical Tech, 2 cr.This course includes the correlation of the relationship to thepractice of sterile technique and infection control in the operativesetting. The student will use the microscope to contrast andcompare the structure and characteristics of microorganisms.SUR-440 Biomedical Science for Surgical Tech, 2 cr.This course provides a broad base of knowledge for the entrylevelsurgical technologist in the areas of computers, electricity,physics, and robotics. As surgical equipment becomes moresophisticated, understanding the fundamental principles of thesetechnologies is essential.SUR-519 Surgical Technology Practicum, 4 cr.This course is provides students the opportunity to attend practicumrotations in the various surgical specialties while scrubbinga variety of perioperative cases to build skills required for complexperioperative patient care. Emphasis is placed on improvingtheir technical skills, critical thinking, speed, efficiency, and
