Vince there's no time to change yoursights, but the problem is that since you'reshooting up and down hill, you're going tohave tocompensate your elevation slightlyif you're shooting &thing but a laserbeam. That being the case, your best bet isto select a load for pure accuracy, andpractice enough with it to know where toKentucky at each range and each angle.Scuttlebutt is that Ad's going to shoot anSA-only Power/S&W .45 next year.Flat trajectory is still valuable, though, because you'll need to be able to see theblack at all stages. Holding under won'thurt too much, but trying to hold over inthe center of the white can destroy youwith a scoring area as small as the oneNSL uses.If you shoot a sixgun, carry speedloaders. You want a holster that's quick todraw from, yet retains the gun whileyou're running across the uneven ground.A thumb-break isn't the best, 'cause ittakes you a second or two to fasten thestrap, and the gun has to be holstered beforeyou leave one pad for another. Mostshooters used open-top rigs, and kept a restraininghand on the gun as they ran. However, you can still lose the piece in afall, and holding one arm rigidly at theside makes you feel awkward running. You want your forearms hanging loose infront of you to sprint with minimum fa-tigue. A cheap spring-tension holster likethe Bucheimer Sentinel might, surprisingly,be the answer.Footwear is imoortant. More shootersseemed to be shod with sneakers than anythingelse. I found Nike cross-country runningshoes to be ideal for me, but I didn'teven place, so take that from whence itcomes. The ground isn't that uneven out there. The worst place is coming off the knollfrom the last firing position as you makeyour final run toward the finish line.Several people took spills there, in practiceand actual competition. A light, flexibleover-the-ankle woodsman's bootmight be the ideal footwear.Dr. Burgess is thinking of changing thecourse around for '78; the range properwill remain the same, but the sequence oftargets, or possibly the angles, may bechanged. Your best bet is to write him forthe current program, and ask specificallyfor details as to the uphill or downhillangles of fire on each shooting pad. Theranges will be spelled out in the brochure. The roast beef banquet had been heldalready. The winners gradually dispersed, taking a last look behind them at thebrightly sunlit pastureland where shootinghistory had been made a year ago and reinforcedagain just now.True believers, they were, and they wereHitting home plate, shooter holdshis long slide .45 in the holster.1California shooters display their competition guns. At right is a M-64stainless with 8" Douglas barrel and Bo Mar rib. Left: a S&W Model 10with 6" Douglas tube and sight hood; latter will be banned in 77 match.going back to their own games-backthe National Match and PPC shooters, back to thousands of committed pistolcompetitors to spread the word . . . and topropagate a new theory of sportshooting. The next shoot will be held on LaborDay Weekend, 1977. By then, the CampPerry crowd will have gotten the word. The combat shooters have gotten it al-.ready, in Jackson a month after the gunsof the NSL fell silent.Next year, it's anybody's guess howmany serious shooters will show up, butthe contingent is sure to be large. They'llbe people who understand shooting, andlove shooting, and want to support whatthe Burgesses are doing. The money willbe an important part of it, but only onepart. And the industry's ears will have perkedup, too. Bill Ruger was the only one whosupported it with cash this year. JohnBianchi and Safariland's Neale Perkinsfattened the pot with merchandise. RonPower, the acknowledged leader in PPCguns, donated one of his heavy barrelcustoms; Jim Clark, who enjoys the samereputation among bullseye shooters, tossed in one of his long-heavy slide -45s.The concept of the Burgesses' shootcannot be ignored by an industry embattledby socio-political forces thatwouldmake it extinct.
