~-have to "stretch" to draw, and this meansthe holster of a full-competition rig shouldbe on the hip with the gun slightly underthe hip point and over the front pocket. For a holster worn on the belt that supportsthe trousers, Ray suggests a crossdraw,as it is easier for the shooter to get atthe pistol. "You can get it out in any position, except lying flat on your stomach."As to the draw itself, Ray says:"The draw should always be smoothand sure. While the expert might be ableto take calculated risks, the novice shouldtrain himself to be safe and to always havethe pistol where it should be at the completionof the draw; that is, with the sightsaligned and the pistol ready to fire (thumbsafety off)."Try to use as little physical movementas necessary to draw the pistol. Usingmore movement than necessary requiresthat the movement or movements have tobe controlled, and this means that you arewasting time and energy."Keep your trigger finger straight whileyou are drawing the pistol from the holster. If you are using a semi-auto with athumb safety, release it and move yourtrigger finger to the trigger after you arewell clear of the holster. If you do thisthen the possibility of your messing up thefiring line with a lot of your blood andearning a lifelong limp will be lessenedconsiderably."After the pistol is drawn, Ray advisesthat the shooter use a two-hand hold ifthere is time; the reasons being (1) morecontrol of the handgun itself, (2) easier touse the sights, and (3) considerably lesssight-alignment loss during rapid fire."The natural point, or hip-shooting, asit's sometimes referred to, should only beused at extremely short ranges, such asseven yards or less, depending on theshooter's ability to hit from the naturalpoint," he stated. "The farther you arefrom your target or the longer the range, the more important it is to hold a sightpictureand squeeze."From 10 yards you might be able tojerk the trigger and still score a good hit,but from, say, 25 yards out, you must havea good sight-picture and a clean break ofthe sear or trigger. The farther you getfrom the target the more exacting youhave to be in everything: sight-picture,trigger-squeeze, grip on pistol, breath-control,and position."Speed vs. Accuracy"If time permits the shooter's assuminga more positive position, the kneeling orprone position will provide greater stability, and," Ray adds, "at long distances alwaystry to use the prone position, if youcan."Normally, in competitive shooting, allstages of fire will start from the standingposition, with pistol in the holster, and theshooting position will be "assumedW.afterthe starting signal is given. "You will haveto decide at once how much time youwant to designate for assuming a positionAMERICAN HANDGUNNER JULY/AUGUST 1977ftichiemieierLft* WESTERN * SPORTSMAN* COMPETITION * LAWGet a Grip on your4Thompson-ContenderOrder the New ~e~lacement Stock and Forearm Today$19.50 eachDesigned for large calibersPerfect fitfor two hand shootersAvailable in left or right hand, please specifyForearm to match stockForearm can be wei hted to lessen muzzle jump~enuine walnut-~ilfinishPlease specify caliber when ordering forearmExotic woods.available upon requestSend Check or M.O.Bankamericard or Master ChargePlease give exp. date and number on bank cards.&~lliernieier BOX 704 - AH Twin Falls, Idaho 83301SAFETY VAULTQsfffiK.
