The network<strong>in</strong>cludes 11 roads total<strong>in</strong>g 3,946 kilometersdesigned as <strong>the</strong> Union Highway. Currently,east to west highways are be<strong>in</strong>g added to <strong>the</strong>exist<strong>in</strong>g north to south vertical highways. Inall, 35 east-west highways total<strong>in</strong>g 15,208kilometers and 45 north-south highways of9,160 kilometers are designated under a UnionHighways proclamation. Included are highwaysunder regional cooperation agreements—ASEAN Highways, Asian Highways, <strong>GMS</strong>economic corridor highways, and an India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway.Thailand has <strong>the</strong> most developed transportnetwork, with 108,004 kilometers (2009) ofnational roads, of which 92% were paved. Allof <strong>the</strong> country’s prov<strong>in</strong>ces are <strong>in</strong>terl<strong>in</strong>ked with agood <strong>in</strong>terregional and <strong>in</strong>terprov<strong>in</strong>cial transportnetwork, and services are mostly available evenfor isolated and remote rural areas. The direction,composition, and volume of traffic flows reflect<strong>the</strong> geographical distribution of economicactivities. Freight traffic is concentratedmostly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> corridor along an axis radiat<strong>in</strong>gfrom Bangkok to <strong>the</strong> south and nor<strong>the</strong>ast.The total length of <strong>the</strong> road system <strong>in</strong> Viet Namis about 287,698 kilometers, of which 15,065kilometers are national roads; 36,225 kilometersare prov<strong>in</strong>cial roads; and <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der aredistrict, commune, and village roads. Abouthalf <strong>the</strong> total length is paved. The transportsector has contributed to <strong>the</strong> rapid economicgrowth of Viet Nam over <strong>the</strong> past decade. It hashelped reduce poverty through improved l<strong>in</strong>ksto markets, education, and health facilities, and<strong>in</strong>directly through its contribution to growth.Most <strong>GMS</strong> countries appear to have focusedon new road construction, without full fund<strong>in</strong>gfor subsequent ma<strong>in</strong>tenance requirements.Motorcycles are a favoritetransportation mode for all k<strong>in</strong>ds ofgoods, Ha Noi, Viet Nam.Transport 217
