DRAFT RECOMMENDED PRACTICE FOR MISSION OPERATIONS REFERENCE MODEL3 MO CONTEXT AND CONCEPTS3.1 OVERVIEWThis section defines the context of a MO service deployment and extends the conceptsoutlined in section 2.3.2 SERVICE CONTEXTA deployment of a MO service is defined as consisting of two aspects, a service provider ofthe MO service and a consumer of that service:Service ConsumerServiceService ProviderFigure 3-1: Basic MO Service Deploymenta) The MO service concept does not define or limit the locations of the two aspects. Aslong as the two aspects can communicate with each other using the relevantcommunications transport, then they may interact.b) The service provider can be located wherever is appropriate for the deployment, be iton ground inside a control system or at another ground facility, at the ground stationitself, onboard an orbiting spacecraft or even onboard a deep space craft or lander. The same applies for the service consumer.c) The two aspects are also not required to be in separate locations. The conceptsupports ground-to-ground, onboard-to-onboard and space-to-space deployments aswell as the more traditional ground-to-space deployments.d) A service consumer interacts with a service provider through the exchange of servicemessages (referred to as messages from this point onwards). (See 3.4 for furtherexplanation.)NOTE – It should be noted that other aspects of a system, such as access control, mayprevent communications, but the concept does not limit it by definition.CCSDS 520.1-R-1 Page 3-1 October 2009
