normal tri- or tetra-alanine interpeptide<br />

bridges an interpeptide bridge consisting <strong>of</strong> a<br />

tri-L-alanyl-L-threonine, peptide (Fig. 13b).<br />

These strains are also physiologically distinct<br />

from normal M. roseus strains (201) <strong>and</strong> may<br />

represent a new species. The same peptidoglycan<br />

was described by Petit et al. (293) in a<br />

strain <strong>of</strong> M. roseus. They thought, however, that<br />

the L-Thr-containing strain is a typical M.<br />

roseus <strong>and</strong> the other strain lacking L-Thr <strong>and</strong><br />

containing only L-Ala residues in the interpeptide<br />

bridge is a mutant. But our studies have<br />

clearly demonstrated. that the strains containing<br />

only L-Ala residues in the interpeptide<br />

bridges are the genuine M. roseus.<br />

Some unusual peptidoglycan types have been<br />

elucidated in micrococci <strong>of</strong> doubtful taxonomic<br />

position (Table 18). In M. luteus ATCC 398 <strong>and</strong><br />

M. freudenreichii ATCC 407, the peptides y -L-<br />

Glu-Gly <strong>and</strong> Y-L-Glu-L-Ala cross-link the peptide<br />

subunits (Fig. 14a <strong>and</strong> b). Both strains have<br />

a distinctly lower GC content than the usual<br />

micrococci. The GC content <strong>of</strong> M. luteus ATCC<br />

398 has been determined to be 66% (324) <strong>and</strong><br />

that <strong>of</strong> M. freudenreichii to be 58 to 59% (37).<br />

M. luteus ATCC 398 also has a different menaquinone<br />

pattern (162) <strong>and</strong> shows no genetic<br />

exchange with a typical M. luteus (195).<br />

The peptidoglycan <strong>of</strong> M. radiodurans contains<br />

i-Orn instead <strong>of</strong> L-Lys (427), <strong>and</strong> the<br />

interpeptide bridge consists <strong>of</strong> di- or triglycine<br />

peptide (Fig. 14f; 109, 340). M. radiodurans also<br />

differs from typical micrococci by the occur-<br />
