Enrollment ProcedureDeadlinesTo enroll for <strong>the</strong> quarter, you must accomplish<strong>the</strong> following by <strong>the</strong> deadlines listed on pages2-5:• Register for classes. (See #2 below. TheRegistration Process)• Pay <strong>the</strong> “now due” amount on your currentBARC statement and all o<strong>the</strong>r outstandingfinancial obligations to UCSB. (See “Fees”beginning on page 12.)• Arrange for <strong>the</strong> release <strong>of</strong> blocks (if any) onyour registration.• Update your address information on GOLD orby turning in a change <strong>of</strong> address form to <strong>the</strong><strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Registrar</strong>. (See #6 below,Address Verification.)2. The RegistrationProcessYou are encouraged to seek academic adviceprior to registration. College and departmentlocations are listed on page 32.Registration Appointments and PassesThree appointments (passes) are assigned toyou. (New and Returning students will onlyreceive Passes 2 and 3.) Each pass through <strong>the</strong>system allows you to make changes to yourregistration record.During <strong>the</strong> first pass you may enroll for nomore than 13.5 units. You may add additionalunits, up to <strong>the</strong> maximum allowed by yourcollege, during <strong>the</strong> second pass. You maycontinue to adjust your schedule during Pass 3.To find out your appointment times, useGOLD. You may only register during <strong>the</strong>appointment times that are assigned to you.Continuing undergraduate students mustregister for at least one course in Pass 1 <strong>of</strong>registration to avoid a $50 late registration fee.Graduate student registration deadline is duringPass 2. New and returning students mustregister for classes on or before <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong>instruction to avoid <strong>the</strong> $50 late registration fee.Priority SystemPriority to obtain classes is based on class leveldetermined by total units completed. Priority isnot assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.Priority is implemented through <strong>the</strong> appointmentsystem with appointments randomlyassigned within each class level. Register at <strong>the</strong>beginning <strong>of</strong> your designated appointment timeto take best advantage <strong>of</strong> your registrationpriority.BlocksA registration block may prevent you frompursuing registration activities. Failure toremove <strong>the</strong> block will result in a Lapse <strong>of</strong> Status(see page 17) and you will be dropped from all<strong>of</strong> your current classes.Time ConflictsGOLD will highlight conflicts but will allow youto schedule a conflict. It is your responsibility tolook for course changes and resolve anyresultant time conflicts.Instructor NumberIf you are registering for a course which requiresan instructor number, you will find <strong>the</strong>se 2-digitnumbers at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each subject listing in thisbooklet inside <strong>the</strong> Individualized Instructionboxes. Note: An instructor listed under twodifferent subject headings will have differentinstructor numbers.PrerequisitesInstructors have final authority in determiningenrollment for <strong>the</strong>ir courses. Verification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>student’s qualifications is made at <strong>the</strong> beginning<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> quarter. Undergraduates can enroll ingraduate courses only if <strong>the</strong>y have an approveddepartmental petition on file in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Registrar</strong> prior to registration.Additionally, certain qualifications are checkedduring and after registration. These qualificationsare identified in <strong>the</strong> “Messages” column <strong>of</strong>a course listing in this publication and in <strong>the</strong>course description in <strong>the</strong> General Catalog. If youdo not meet <strong>the</strong>se qualifications, you may bedropped from <strong>the</strong> course by <strong>the</strong> department.Adding After <strong>the</strong> 5th Day <strong>of</strong> ClassInstructor approval is required to add a classafter <strong>the</strong> 5th day <strong>of</strong> instruction. If permission isgranted, students will be given course approvalcodes which can be used to add <strong>the</strong> class until<strong>the</strong> published add deadline.Approval CodesUnder some circumstances, departments orinstructors may issue course approval codes tostudents to override various enrollmentrestrictions. Course approval codes may beused on GOLD until <strong>the</strong> published adddeadline.Writing Course Restrictions• Writing 1, 1E, 2, 2E, 50, and 50EWriting 1, 2, and 50 (or <strong>the</strong>ir LINKS equivalents)must be taken in sequence. You may not enrollin <strong>the</strong>se courses without having met <strong>the</strong>prerequisites, and you may not enroll in <strong>the</strong>m ifyou have already satisfied <strong>the</strong> Subject A andArea A General Education requirements.Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> large backlog <strong>of</strong> studentswaiting for admission to <strong>the</strong>se courses, it isextremely unlikely that instructors will admit<strong>University</strong> Extension concurrent enrollmentstudents.9• LINKS CoursesLINKS are writing classes whose reading andwriting assignments are directly related to <strong>the</strong>lectures, readings and writings <strong>of</strong> certain o<strong>the</strong>rcourses. LINKS courses are designated with anLK, e.g., Writing 1LK, 2LK, or 50LK. Studentsmust enroll in <strong>the</strong> companion course beforeenrolling in <strong>the</strong> LINKS class. Materials for bothcourses are related, but testing and grading areindependent. In addition, papers for one coursemay not be submitted for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r course.LINKS writing courses carry <strong>the</strong> same number <strong>of</strong>units and fulfill <strong>the</strong> same General Educationrequirements as any o<strong>the</strong>r Writing 1, 2, or 50class.Dropping Writing CoursesThe deadline to drop Writing 1, 1E, 2, 2E, 50 or50E (or <strong>the</strong>ir LINKS equivalents) is <strong>the</strong> fifth day<strong>of</strong> university instruction. The winter quarter dropdeadline is Friday, January 7, 2005 (by 6:45 p.m.via GOLD), for <strong>the</strong>se courses.Students with DisabilitiesIf you are unable to use GOLD please call <strong>the</strong>Registration Helpline at (805) 893-3592 orcontact <strong>the</strong> Disabled Students Program at(805) 893-2668 V/TDD.Repeating a CourseCertain courses may be repeated for credit andare identified in <strong>the</strong> course descriptions in <strong>the</strong>UCSB General Catalog. Repetition <strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>rcourse completed at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>California</strong>,is subject to regulations that appear in <strong>the</strong>UCSB General Catalog. Graduate studentsshould consult Graduate Division and <strong>the</strong>iracademic departments before repeating acourse.If you are an undergraduate repeating acourse to improve your grade-point averagebecause you previously received a C- or below,or a NP, you need to specify this repeat toGOLD. PetitionsSpecial approval prior to registration isrequired for each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following:Enrollment in a 98/99 or 198/199/199AA-ZZ Independent Studies coursePetition source: Sponsoring department.Approvals required: See instructor and chair <strong>of</strong>department sponsoring <strong>the</strong> 98, 99, 198, 199,199AA-ZZ for details. 198/199/199AA-ZZ coursesare open only to upper-division students whohave at least a 3.0 grade-point average for <strong>the</strong>preceding three quarters and who can demonstrate<strong>the</strong>ir qualifications for independent studyin <strong>the</strong> chosen field (normally completion <strong>of</strong> atleast two upper-division courses in <strong>the</strong> samefield). Lower-division CCS students may alsotake 198/199 courses <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong>Creative Studies. Eligible undergraduates areconfined to taking courses numbered 200-299and only those 500-level courses described asGroup Studies or Special Topics. Students should be aware thatapproval is granted only in very limitedcircumstances.Students from campuses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>California</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>California</strong> State <strong>University</strong> and <strong>the</strong><strong>California</strong> Community Colleges are permitted toenroll in a maximum <strong>of</strong> one course peracademic term at a campus <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r systems on a space-available basis. Therequirements for participation include: <strong>the</strong>student has completed at least one quarter at<strong>the</strong> home campus, has paid fees at <strong>the</strong> homecampus and is enrolled in at least six units for<strong>the</strong> cross-enrollment term, has a grade-pointaverage <strong>of</strong> at least 2.0 for work completed, is a<strong>California</strong> resident and has <strong>the</strong> appropriateacademic preparation for <strong>the</strong> course. Students in<strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Letters and Science and <strong>the</strong>College <strong>of</strong> Creative Studies with on-goingoutside responsibilities may petition forpermanent deficit approval.Deficit loads may impact your financial loanstatus as well as personal insurance coverage.It is strongly recommended to check withFinancial Aid and/or your insurance companybefore carrying a deficit load.• EXCESS PROGRAMSIf you plan to take more units than <strong>the</strong> maximumspecified by your college, you must petition foran excess program during <strong>the</strong> registrationperiod. The maximum number <strong>of</strong> units whichyou may attempt each quarter depends on youracademic status and <strong>the</strong> regulations <strong>of</strong> yourcollege. Generally, new students (transfers andfreshmen alike) are discouraged from attemptingmore than <strong>the</strong> allowable maximum for <strong>the</strong>irfirst quarter at UCSB.
