In addition, since theOmbudsman is to protect human rights<strong>and</strong> basic freedoms in matters involvingstate bodies, local government bodies<strong>and</strong> statutory authorities, it too mayprovide an avenue to victims of sexualorientation discrimination.The Anti-discrimination Act 79 providesthat the national human rights institutionfor Slovakia, the Slovenské národnéstredisko pre ľudské práva (SNSĽP)[Slovak National Centre for HumanRights (SNCHR)], shall assume thepowers of an equality body, for alldiscrimination grounds.CompetencesWhile the Council of theGovernment for theImplementation of the Principleof Equal Treatment haspromotional duties, theEquality Advocate may act onthe basis of complaints leadingto opinions <strong>and</strong>recommendations addressedto the author of thediscrimination, <strong>and</strong> may alsoadopt advisory opinions.SNCHR provides legalassistance to victims ofdiscrimination, which mayinclude representation in legalproceedings, <strong>and</strong> preparationof expert opinions oncompliance with the principle ofequal treatment. It mayprepare reports <strong>and</strong>recommendations on theimplementation of the principleof equal treatment.StatisticsIn total, 4 complaintswere filed with theEquality Advocatesince 2000 based onsexual orientationdiscrimination (datafor 2007 notavailable).
