CHAPTER 9CONCLUSIONPolar bears are poor candidates for captivity, even in the best ofcircumstances. They are extremely wide-ranging, highly intelligent, coldweather carnivores, so they are highly problematic to house and care for incaptivity. In fact, many experts believe they are one of the species most illsuitedto captivity. This belief has already resulted in a reduction in thenumber of captive polar bears in some regions (e.g. United Kingdom) andincreased criticism of the keeping of polar bears worldwide.This report reaffirms the inherent difficulties in keeping polar bears withoutcompromising their welfare. The report also clearly shows that the polarbears at Singapore Zoo are living in suboptimal conditions. Based on thescientific studies conducted, both bears are showing signs of heat stress andhigh levels of inactivity and abnormal stereotypic behaviours.These welfare problems can be attributed to both the climate in Singaporeand the enclosure the bears live in. The polar bear enclosure at SingaporeZoo is undersized, barren, poorly designed and does little to satisfy thebiological and behavioural needs of the bears.
