MISSION STATEMENTTo provide for all, the quality of service we expect for our families, and ourselves.TITLE:SPECIALTY:BASE:RESPONSIBLE TO:Specialty DoctorEmergency MedicineCauseway Hospital, ColeraineClinical DirectorJOB SUMMARYThese are new posts established to provide the Emergency Department inCauseway Hospital with additional senior cover including out of hours and toimprove the department’s compliance with the European working timedirective.The post holder will work under the clinical direction of the Consultants inEmergency Medicine from Causeway Hospital.The post would be ideal for an experienced SHO equivalent who wishes topursue a career in Emergency Medicine. It will also be ideal for those wishingto pursue a Non-Consultant Career Grade post in Emergency Medicine. Thispost would involve clinical work as a Middle Grade in the EmergencyDepartment as well as an organised professional development programmecustomised to the individual’s needs. Educational targets will be establishedat appraisal.The post-holders will undertake clinical sessions in the EmergencyDepartment at Causeway Hospital. Out of hours work will be required. Therewill be no on call commitment.PROFILE OF HOSPITALCauseway Hospital opened at the end of May 2001. It is situated in the town ofColeraine on the north Antrim coast, an area of outstanding natural beauty witha catchment area which extends west to Limavady, south to Maghera and eastto Ballycastle. The population of 150000 rises significantly during the summermonths. There are many good beaches in the locality suitable for surfing as wellas top class golf courses and visitor attractions. There is excellentaccommodation and shopping in the Coleraine localityThe hospital is a state-of-the-art facility, which includes 240 beds, 24 hourEmergency Medicine service, an outstanding Day Procedure Unit, and excellentOutpatient facilities.


There is access to a range of clinical support services on site, including a CTScanner with 24 hour Consultant Radiologist cover, NIPACs system, 24 hour,full accredited (CPA – UK) Ltd Laboratory services are operational on theCauseway Hospital site and there is access to Medical Photography support.A Telemedicine System is currently available to facilitate sharing ofinformation with other health care sitesThe bed complement includes:General Surgery (including Paediatric Surgery and Urology)Day Procedure UnitGeneral Medicine (including Dermatology)Coronary CareIntensive Care/High DependencyElderly RehabilitationPaediatric MedicineObstetricsGynaecologyAcute PsychiatryWORK OF DEPARTMENTEmergency departmentAttendances – 43,000 per year with an undifferentiated case mix whichinclude Trauma, Paediatrics, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics& Gynaecology and Psychiatry.Facilities5 Consultant Led Clinics per week5 Bedded fully monitored major’s area3 Rooms for minor injuries4 Bedded Resuscitation areaThe department has patient tracking systems (footman walker). KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIESClinical duties To assess and treat new patients To act as resuscitation team leader for seriously ill or injured patients,including children while they are in the Emergency Department or X-ray Department. To undertake review clinics To assist in the supervision and training of junior medical staff To perform minor surgical procedures including manipulation offractures.SUPERVISION ARRANGEMENTSThe post holder will be supervised on a day to day basis by consultantpresence in hours, out of hours there will be an on call consultant available fortelephone advice and to attend the department if required, e.g. major traumaCONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTHe post holder will have an Emergency Medicine consultant acting as his/hereducational supervisor. He/she will be required to maintain registration forcontinuing professional development with College of Emergency Medicine.He/she will be expected to participate in regular appraisal in accordance withthe Trust’s arrangements for clinical governance. The appointee will normallybe required to undertake yearly audit to ensure that the standards within theEmergency Department are in accordance with established guidelines.There will be protected time will be available for learning, research and audit.There is a dedicated medical library with links to the queen’s university libraryand multidisciplinary education centre on site.The post holder will be entitled to study and professional leave in accordancewith his/her requirements for continuing professional development. Theleave, along with adequate financial support, will be made available throughthe Clinical Director.

JOB PLAN REVIEWThe <strong>Job</strong> Plan should be reviewed annually, but can be reviewed earlier at therequest of either the doctor or the Clinical Manager. If it is not possible toagree a <strong>Job</strong> Plan, either initially or at an annual review, there are agreedprocedures for facilitation and appeal with the final decision being binding onboth the doctor and the Trust.EMPLOYING AUTHORITYNorthern Health and Social Care Trust.TERMS AND CONDITIONS• The National Terms and Conditions of Service for Specialty Doctors willapply.• As per the current salary scale under National Terms and Conditions ofService for Hospital staff as updated via DHSSPS circular on rates ofpay, the most recent HSS (TC8) 3/2008, with effect from 1 April 2008 to31 March 2009 and all uplifts thereafter.• The full-time appointment will be for 10 PAs per week.• The successful applicant will normally be appointed to the grade for a oneyear probationary period which, if confirmed, will be extended withoutterm and held until retirement under the terms and conditions of service.• The appointee will maintain registration with the General Medical Council(London).• Annual leave entitlement is 5 weeks (25 days) per year until 2 yearsservice have been completed in the grade and 6 weeks (30 days)thereafter for practitioners remaining in the grade. Where the appointee inhis/her immediately previous regular appointment attracted the 6 weeksannual leave per annum, this entitlement would remain.• You are required to live within a distance of 30 minutes or 10 miles byroad from your base place of work unless the employing organisationagrees that they may reside at a greater distance.• Your private residence shall be maintained in contact with the publictelephone service• He/she will be expected to be flexible and to co-operate with reasonablerequests to cover for their colleagues’ absences where they are safe andcompetent and where it is practicable to do so. Where doctors undertake
