There is a LaboratoryGeneral Manager and a departmental Head of Service BiomedicalScientist, departmental Quality personnel and a Health and SafetyManager in accordance with CPA requirements.Each Consultant has an annual Appraisal and review of <strong>Job</strong> Plan.Annual and study leave will be co-ordinated with the Clinical Head ofDepartment/General Manager. Annual leave must be notified andagreed with the Head of Department at least 6 weeks before leave istaken and approved by the Deputy Clinical Director or Clinical Directorof the MDS Directorate. Cross cover arrangements will be put in placefor on-call as appropriate and leave between the existing chemicalpathologists and the successful candidate.The current consultant Chemical Pathologists are on-site on Antrimand Causeway Laboratory. The appointee for this post will be basedon the Antrim site with sessions in Causeway.Clinical activity to be determined by arrangement. Current clinicalinterests of the Consultant Chemical Pathology staff include lipids,diabetes, obesity and nutritional support. General clinical advice onbiochemistry testing to primary and secondary care constitutes asignificant part of clinical activity. The successful candidate may wishto develop special areas of interest in conjunction with CHOD withagreement with the appropriate Clinical Director and Medical Director.Clinical Governance arrangementsThe Medical Director is Dr Peter Flanagan who is responsible foroverall medical issues within the Trust. The Trust containsDirectorates of Medical Specialties, Surgery, Radiology, Pathology andWoman’s and Children’s Services each of which is headed by aClinical Director/General Manager. Clinical sessions allocated bymutual agreement to the successful candidate will be under thedirection of Dr Olivia Dornan, Clinical Director of Acute and EmergencyMedicine. The current Chemical Pathologist has clinical out-patientsessions in cardiac risk/dyslipidaemia management (Antrim) anddiabetes (Causeway site). • Participate in the Clinical Biochemistry Trust wide on-call rota(Band A), which includes 1 other Consultant (1:2 rota) includingweekends. This will change to a 1:3 rota when vacant part timepost is appointed.Offer clinical guidance and advice to hospital clinicians andgeneral practitioners on the selection, performance andinterpretation of relevant biochemical tests to facilitate thediagnosis, treatment, monitoring and understanding of disease.• Play an active part in the functioning and administration of thepathology service, contribute to the planning and futuredevelopment of the service and the preparation of change inoperational policy.• Make effective and efficient use of facilities to which he/she hasaccess.• Have responsibility for continuing care of patients in his/hercharge and undertake associated administrative duties.• Take a role in training and teaching of medical staff in the traininggrades and the non-consultant career grades.• Review of Log Books of students, training grades etc as requiredto meet the standards of Royal College of Pathologists, PostGraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) andFaculty of Medicine & Sciences (QUB).• There will be a teaching commitment for undergraduate studentsand postgraduate training.• Participate in multi-disciplinary audit. Update clinical, managerialknowledge and skills. Participate in continuing medical educationand in research programmes as appropriate and enrol in arecognised programme of Continued Professional Development.Financial support for Continued Professional Development /Study Leave is available. The Trust will support appropriate StudyLeave as contained in the Terms and conditions of Service.All research must be managed in accordance with therequirements of the DHSSPS Research Governance Framework.Consultants must comply with reporting requirements, systemsand duties of action plan put in place by the employingorganisation to deliver research governance. This will require close co-operation withother specialties and hospitals to provide a high standard andcomprehensive range of services.• Responsible for the continuing clinical and professionalresponsibility for patients admitted under his or her care for alocal population. It is also the duty of the Consultant to:-• Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informedabout their condition;• Involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decisionmaking about their treatment;• Maintain professional standards and obligations as set outfrom time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) andcomply in particular with the GMC’s guidance on ‘GoodMedical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time totime.• Participate with colleagues in the Trust’s planning process.• Work collaboratively with other Trusts in keeping with bestpractice, regional strategy and trust policy.• Use Trust wide and departmental computer technology in linewith the Trust’s Information Management and Technologystrategy.• Set, monitor and evaluate quality standards for pathology serviceand ensure that all staff adhere to the philosophy and valuescontained within the quality strategy• Participate in the Clinical Governance process.• Participate in the Appraisal and <strong>Job</strong> Planning process.• The post-holder will be required to agree a job plan with theClinical Director within three months of taking up theappointment.
