Je last vsakogar, do vseh enak in ne služi<br />
ničemur, kar je skrito ali zlo. To so misli<br />
nobelovca iva andrića o mostu, najlepši in<br />
simbolno najbolj sporočilni arhitekturi. Je<br />
simbol svobode, ker povezuje stvari, ki niso<br />
bile še nikoli povezane in ker premaguje<br />
navidez nepremagljive ovire.<br />

V samem središču ljubljane stojijo trije mostovi, ločeni, a združeni<br />
v en most. V srednjem veku je na istem mestu stal leseni Špitalski<br />
most, kolibe na vsaki strani mostu so naseljevali kramarji, strugarji,<br />
glavničarji in slaščičar. Sredi 19. stoletja ga je nadomestil kamniti,<br />
tako imenovani Frančev most, otvoritvi leta 1842 je namreč<br />
prisostvoval sam avstrijski nadvojvoda Franc karl. Sčasoma je postal<br />
premajhen, zato so ga po zamisli arhitekta Jožeta plečnika po prvi<br />
svetovni vojni razširili, dodana pa sta bila še dva mostova za pešce.<br />
balustrade, ki krasijo tudi dve stopnišči do spodnje terase reke<br />
ljubljanice, tvori 642 stebričkov, ki so jih ročno obrusile kar ljubljanske<br />
družine. Tromostovje je danes ključna točka središča ljubljane.<br />

serves no hidden or evil agenda” - That is how nobel<br />
prize winner ivo andrić saw <strong>the</strong> bridge, that most<br />
beautiful and symbolically richest type <strong>of</strong> architectural<br />
structure. The bridge is synonymous with freedom: it<br />
connects things that have never been connected before<br />
and overcomes seemingly insurmountable barriers.<br />
three in one<br />
in <strong>the</strong> very centre <strong>of</strong> ljubljana stands a very special bridge: Tromostovje<br />
in Slovenian - in english Three bridges or Triple bridge - which in fact<br />
constitutes three separate bridges. There is mention <strong>of</strong> a wooden bridge in<br />
this location in <strong>the</strong> Middle ages (hospital bridge) flanked by cabins on both<br />
sides occupied by petty tradesmen, turners, comb makers and a pastry<br />
cook. This was replaced in mid-19th century by a new, stone bridge named<br />
Frančev most (Franz’s bridge) in <strong>the</strong> honour <strong>of</strong> archduke karl Franz - who<br />
even attended <strong>the</strong> opening ceremony in 1842. after World War i it was<br />
extended into <strong>the</strong> “Triple bridge” using <strong>the</strong> design <strong>of</strong> architect Jože plečnik,<br />
who added pedestrian bridges ei<strong>the</strong>r side, effectively widening <strong>the</strong> bridge<br />
and preventing it from being a bottleneck. The stone balustrades, which<br />
also adorn <strong>the</strong> two stairways leading to <strong>the</strong> lower terrace overlooking<br />
<strong>the</strong> ljubljanica river, feature 642 balusters hand carved by <strong>the</strong> town’s<br />
residents. Tromostovje is a focal central point in downtown ljubljana.<br />
Bajeslovno in moderno<br />
od donave po Savi do ljubljanice je kar dolga pot, ki jo je antični<br />
heroj in argonavt Jazon ubral, da je v jezeru nekje med Vrhniko in<br />
ljubljano lahko zmagal v boju z močvirsko pošastjo, ki je menda<br />
ovekovečena prav v podobi ljubljanskega zmaja.<br />
Štirje veliki zmaji in šestnajst malih pa krasi zdaj zmajski most,<br />
izjemni gradbeni in arhitekturni dosežek svojega časa. leto 1901. se<br />
je pisalo, ko je bil zgrajen ta med prvimi armiranobetonskimi ločnimi<br />
mostovi. inicialki Franca Jožefa i. z vladarskima letnicama 1848–<br />
1888 na betonski fasadi mostu, ki je lep primer secesijske umetnosti<br />
pri nas, govorita o prvih štiridesetih letih vladanja enega poslednjih<br />
cesarjev avstro-ogrske monarhije, zato je bil most nekdaj poznan tudi<br />
po imenu Jubilejni most.<br />
Čez Šuštarski most<br />
leseni predhodnik današnjega Čevljarskega mostu ostaja le v spominu<br />
na čas, ko so male kramarske lope na obeh straneh mostu najemali<br />
šuštarji – čevljarji, tam od leta 1614 naprej. ko je odslužil svojemu<br />
namenu, je leta 1867 na istem mestu povezoval mestni novi in Stari<br />
trg že varnejši most, prvi litoželezni most v ljubljani. današnji Šuštarski<br />
most, ki še vedno povezuje nekdanje glavno vozlišče mestnih poti in<br />
predstavlja eno najvidnejših točk mestne promenade, je po plečnikovih<br />
načrtih nastal leta 1932. posebno privlačnost mu daje značilna podoba<br />
izmenjujočih se stebričev in visokih stebrov.<br />
mythical and modern<br />
it is a long way from <strong>the</strong> danube river to <strong>the</strong> ljubljanica up <strong>the</strong><br />
Sava river, which was <strong>the</strong> route travelled by ancient hero Jason <strong>the</strong><br />
argonaut to <strong>the</strong> watery wilderness somewhere between Vrhnika and<br />
ljubljana where he slew a marsh monster whose image might well<br />
be that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ljubljana dragon.<br />
Four large and sixteen small dragons adorn <strong>the</strong> dragon bridge, a<br />
triumph <strong>of</strong> engineering and architecture for its time. one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />
reinforced-concrete arch bridges ever built, dragon bridge was<br />
completed in 1901. The initials <strong>of</strong> Franz Josef i and <strong>the</strong> years <strong>of</strong> his<br />
reign 1848-1888 on <strong>the</strong> concrete face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bridge, which is a fine<br />
example <strong>of</strong> Secession style architecture in our parts, commemorate<br />
<strong>the</strong> first forty years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rule <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last emperors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
austro-hungarian monarchy, hence <strong>the</strong> bridge also used to be known<br />
as Jubilee bridge.<br />
across <strong>the</strong> Shoemakers’ Bridge<br />
The wooden predecessor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present Shoemakers’ bridge continues<br />
to exist only as a memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> times when shoemakers used to rent<br />
stalls on both sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bridge, from about 1614 onwards. once its<br />
service life had come to an end in 1867, a safer bridge was erected in<br />
its place to connect <strong>the</strong> novi trg and Stari trg; incidentally, <strong>the</strong> new bridge<br />
was also <strong>the</strong> first cast iron bridge in ljubljana. The present Shoemakers’<br />
bridge, which continues to provide access to what was once <strong>the</strong> hub <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> town and now constitutes a vital part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town promenade, was<br />
designed by plečnik and built in 1932 from artificial stone. The bridge is<br />
characterised by its highly distinctive design featuring alternating short<br />
and tall columns.
