IMPLEMENTATION OF NARROWBAND AND WIDEBAND WAVEFORMS FOR SDRIn today‘s fast evolving world the technological growth in the field of WirelessCommunication is extensive. Unfortunately conventional radio devices have limitedcross-functionality. Hence the concept of SDR came into being. Software Defined Radiotechnology aims to take advantage of programmable hardware modules to build Openarchitecturebased radio system software. This leads to device flexibility, softwareportability and system upgradability. This project focuses to develop VHF/UHF Narrowband and Wideband waveforms forexisting SDR platforms. The narrowband waveform based on frequency modulation(FM) designed for audio transmission and OFDM Wideband waveform designed fordata transmission coded in C++ and Python are implemented on the platform. OFDM ischosen so as to achieve higher data rate. It is spectrally efficient and is a sensationaltechnology that has found its way into the most important standards for wirelesscommunications. In the new generation called 4G, in which the main standards are theIEEE 802.16 (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX)) and the3GPP‘s Long Term Evolution (LTE).Amongst the wide choice of commercially available SDR platforms, such as the DSP,GPP, FPGA, the GPP with USRP as the RF frontend is being used in the project. TheGeneral Purpose Processor used in this project is not the computer‘s processor but theBeagleboard-xM. The Beagleboard-xM is equipped with a Cortex A8 1GHz processor. The USRP board in conjunction with a RF daughterboard, a Beagleboard-xM and GNUradio Software is being used. The project envisions creating a standalone Software Defined Radio device dedicatedto the transmission and reception of the indigenously developed VHF/UHF Narrowbandand Wideband waveforms. The project will help to intrinsically maximize the benefits ofSDR by providing waveforms to manufacturers building commercial base stations, mobiles and small form-factor handheld radios to allow them to reap the practicalbenefits of reusable, maintainable code. It will also pave the path for the furtherdevelopment of the telecommunication and information technology industry in Pakistan, making them capable to offer system based on latest wireless reconfigurabletechnologies.Syndicate Members: Sarah Shahid SahibzadaAatqa HussainQurat-ul-AinMidhat JavaidSupervisor:Dr Adnan Rashidi9
